What Are Functional Teas And Why Should You Drink Them?

The benefits of drinking tea go beyond the art of preparation and taking in the aroma. Green, black and herbal teas contain phytonutrients, compounds that not only give plants their color, flavor and aroma, but can also benefit human health. 

Some tea companies even infuse already good-for-you tea with vitamins and functional herbs. Consider them a different school of functional tea.

From fruit-infused green tea to “energy” and “bedtime” blends, there are dozens of functional teas to choose from. Here are a few time-tested functional teas to keep in your cabinet.

Green and Black Tea

To support antioxidant activity, prepare a cup of green tea. Made from the Camellia sinensis plant, green tea contains four components called catechins, which are part of a family of compounds known as flavonoids.

Want green tea’s nutritional benefits with an energy boost? Choose black tea. It contains up to two to three times as much caffeine as green tea (depending on brew time), with similar health properties.

Black tea’s “functional” compounds may also reduce stroke risk. University of California Los Angeles researchers conducted an evidence-based review of nine studies that involved 195,000 people total, including 4,378 stroke cases. The data showed drinking 3 cups of black tea reduced stroke risk by 21 percent. Researchers speculated EGCG, the tea’s main catechin, was a contributing factor.

Green, black and white teas all contain L-Theanine, which is the reason tea gives you an energy boost without the coffee jitters.


Chamomile promotes relaxation and restful sleep. Chamomile’s sleep-inducing effects have to do with the flavonoid apigenin, which binds to certain receptors in the brain, causing sleepiness.

Chamomile also holds anti-inflammatory properties. Researchers from University Hospitals Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, examined the anti-inflammatory effects of chamomile tea. They found chamomile exhibited activity similar to that of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).


Just like lavender essential oils promote relaxation and sleep, drinking lavender tea has calming benefits. Inhaling lavender tea’s steam may slow nervous system activity, prompting relaxation, according to University of Maryland Medical Center.

Aromatherapists use lavender to treat headaches, nervous disorders and exhaustion. Other natural health practitioners recommend it in a bath to treat muscle and joint pain. Try a spot of lavender tea before bed and feel your cares melt away.


For an overall digestive soother, drink a steaming cup of peppermint tea. One of the best teas for digestion, peppermint is generally known to soothe stomachaches, cramps and heartburn.

Refreshing peppermint contains menthol, which can break up phlegm and thin mucus. The next time you have a cold, inhale the steam before you drink up.


Ginger not only adds zip to baked goods and stir-fries, it also settles your stomach. Ginger contains at least 14 bioactive compounds that yield many health benefits.

Ginger contains a high level of antioxidants, which benefits heart health. It’s also considered an anti-inflammatory herb. Data suggests it moderates pain-sensitivity receptors, which may help ease arthritis stiffness.

Ginger’s most common benefit, however, is to ease stomach woes. Of the many ginger studies, one study found pregnant women who used ginger supplements experienced less vomiting and nausea than the placebo group—without side effects.

Green, black and herbal tea compounds may have beneficial properties, but the ritual of preparing tea also has a place in a healthy lifestyle. Curling up with a warm cup of tea is a calorie- and alcohol-free way to relax at the end of the day and it’s a great way to stay hydrated.

Mezzaluna drops Bond-inspired song “I Beg”

"I wrote this song based on a personal experience that I went through back in high school. I was really in my feelings and made this song in about 10 minutes. The song was initially really short, but the bridge came along later, and I'm really proud of how it turned out. I told you I'm the one who stood there by your side, that's why I beg. I had the intention to create an arrangement worthy of a James Bond theme song.So my biggest inspiration for this track was Adele's 'Skyfall' and Sam Smith's 'Writing's on the Wall'. I think this theme matches my image and vocal range the most. I worked with Deby Sucha again for the music video and this time, I surrendered everything to her because I trusted her work on my previous video. She came up with the brilliant idea of giving the music video the karaoke treatment and it was amazing. Mezzaluna drops Bond-inspired song “I Beg

Sony Music's OFFMUTE artist, Mezzaluna, is back with her second single, I Beg.”

Following the success of her debut single, In Situ,” the 20-year-old Indonesian singer-songwriter offers us another peek into her personal life with her signature storytelling style. 

The ballad dives quickly into Mezzaluna's sultry vocal delivery of disappointment and hopelessness. The dark piano melody builds through the chorus as she turns to desperation for answers, and as the second verse drops, a sense of strength rings true.

The accompanying music video was left in Sucha's capable hands, having previously directed Mezzaluna's first music video.

How the pandemic sparked changes to Gen Zs and Millennials’ Breakfast Habits

Forming new habits is not always easy. It takes determination, strong willpower, and a right environment to start something new. Research has shown that on average, it takes 66 days, equivalent to over two months, for a new behavior to become automatic.

Over the past year, with more consumers staying at home as a result of the pandemic, new habits were being formed. According to the Asia Pacific Breakfast Habits Survey 2021 conducted by Herbalife Nutrition to understand the impact of the current pandemic on consumers’ breakfast attitudes and habits as well as the behavior preferences of different demographic groups, two in five (37 percent) Gen Zs and Millennials in the region began eating breakfast more often and half of the respondents who started doing so said they ate breakfast six to seven more days per week.

When it comes to positive breakfast habits, they mainly involve two key considerations – the frequency of eating breakfast and the nutrition that goes into it to make a healthy meal. 

As revealed by the survey, Gen Zs and Millennials have increased their breakfast frequencies because of their motivation to improve health and well-being (65 percent); ability to prepare breakfast with more time on hand (48 percent); and their desire to use this time at home to make a positive lifestyle change (41 percent). In addition, they have also started eating healthier by incorporating more vegetables and fruits (57 percent); have a nutritionally balanced meal (54 percent); and drank more water (52 percent).  

While there have been positive changes to their breakfast habits, making consuming breakfast a daily commitment does require effort and determination to ensure that these good habits stick. 

Here are some tips offered by Susan Bowerman, Senior Director, Worldwide Nutrition Education and Training, Herbalife Nutrition, on the benefits of a healthy breakfast and how to ensure that their positive breakfast habits last. 

What Is a Good Breakfast?

The foods you eat for breakfast can affect how you feel and perform throughout your morning. There are several things that a good breakfast can do for you.

A healthy breakfast can…
  • Keep you fueled up until your next meal or snack. A well balanced breakfast should provide you with staying power. Foods with protein help to satisfy hunger, and high fiber foods help to fill you up.
  • Supply your body and brain with energy. In the morning, your body’s gas tank is running close to empty. When you eat the right foods for breakfast, you’re providing your muscles and brain with the fuel they need for optimal performance.
  • Help avoid blood sugar swings and reduce cravings. A balanced meal that contains both protein and healthy carbohydrates can provide sustained energy throughout your system, and help prevent wild swings in your blood sugar that trigger cravings for sweets or other unhealthy foods. (This applies as long as you don’t have any medical issues regarding your body’s ability to regulate your blood sugar.)
  • Help you make better food choices throughout the day. Breakfast skippers often experience food cravings for sweets and fats that can persist throughout the day. When breakfast is eaten, the cravings for sweets drop dramatically. If the breakfast is high in protein, it tends to also reduce cravings for salty, fatty foods. So, the right foods in the morning can help reduce cravings for unhealthy foods later in the day, and steer you towards healthier choices.
  • Provide enough protein to help support muscle health. Eating enough protein in the morning not only helps satisfy hunger, it can also help maintain muscle health. For many people, typical daily meals tend to provide little protein at breakfast, a bit more at lunch, and a much larger amount at dinner. This is a pattern that may not provide the best conditions for building and repairing muscle tissue. Muscle protein synthesis can improve when protein intake is more evenly distributed throughout the day.

Don’t skip breakfast 

With the many benefits that a healthy breakfast offers, it’s a meal that shouldn’t be so casually dismissed.

However, whether you are working from home or working from office, it is easy and convenient to skip breakfast just for those extra few minutes of sleep, especially on days when it is challenging to wake up because of a cool rainy morning or pulling an intense late night the previous night. 

With this in mind, perhaps making a few simple changes to daily living might do the trick – such as waking up 15 minutes earlier each day to prepare a quick and nutritious breakfast.

Incorporating a nutritious breakfast everyday

When it comes to selecting what to eat for breakfast, a healthy, balanced breakfast should provide you with a decent amount of protein (20-30 grams is a good target). This helps satisfy hunger and supports muscle health, and along with some healthy carbohydrates can provide sustained energy and fiber. Carbohydrates should include, at the very least, some fruits or vegetables. If your calorie budget allows, add some whole grains as well.
