SM Little Stars 2024 highlights young talent and promotes a brighter future.

Get ready, children and parents! SM Little Stars 2024 has arrived, bigger and brighter than ever before! It's your child's chance to shine on a national stage, potentially changing their life. SM Little Stars allows children to express themselves through the performing arts, developing young talent and enriching our communities. If you're between the ages of 4 and 7 and have a talent that will take the world by storm, SM Supermalls is looking for you!

This isn't just any talent show; it's the Philippines' largest mall-based kiddie talent search, held annually at SM Malls including SM City Marilao, SM City Baliwag, and SM Center Pulilan. Now in its 15th year, SM Little Stars is a beloved tradition that brings communities together to showcase their best and brightest. In 2023 alone, 33,722 participants auditioned at 70 malls! This year, SM will bring the talent showdown to its 71 participating malls for preliminary screenings, and we can't wait to see what talent you'll bring!

Registration for the Preliminary Screenings is via SM Malls Online app. In SM Center Pulilan, at least 197 talented kids joined the Preliminary Screening last June 8 and will continue on June 22. SM City Baliwag leg is on June 16 and July 14, while SM City Marilao’s schedule is on July 6 and 13. The competition journey includes Preliminary Screenings, Regional Finals, and the Grand Finals. Mark your calendars for the Grand Finals on September 7 at SM Mall of Asia, where 28 grand finalists will shine bright on the big stage.

Partners for Equal Employment Opportunity. The Jollibee Group and the Quezon City (QC) Local Government Unit signed a Memorandum of Agreement to provide employment opportunity to qualified senior citizens and persons with disabilities in Q.C. The Jollibee Group and the Quezon City local government have signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) to provide inclusive employment opportunities for over 200 senior citizens (SC) and people with disabilities (PWDs) in over 50 Jollibee, Chowking, Greenwich, and Burger King stores in the city. 


Advancing the Welfare of SCs and PWDs. Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte underscores the importance of partnerships with institutions like the Jollibee Group in promoting the well-being and dignity of SCs and PWDs through equal employment opportunities. 


In her message during the signing ceremony, Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte underscored the importance of partnerships with institutions like the Jollibee Group in promoting the well-being and dignity of SCs and PWDs through equal employment opportunities.

For us in Quezon City, progress must be inclusive; everyone must be part of our progress. Age is just a number and a mindset, and we should not allow our age or our disability to be an obstacle to what we can contribute to our nation-building. Interested SCs and PWDs should go to the Quezon City Public Employment Service Office (PESO) for assistance with the requirements. They must also obtain fit-to-work certification from the Quezon City Health Department before beginning the initial job screening by the City's Social Services Department and the Persons with Disability Affairs Office. 


Promoting an Inclusive Workplace. Since 2019, the Jollibee Group has partnered with various local government units in promoting an inclusive workplace where qualified SCs and PWDs can have the opportunity to join the Jollibee Group in its mission to serve great-tasting food, bringing the joy of eating to everyone.


Once qualified, SCs and PWDs will be recommended by the LGU to the Jollibee Group for positions in select company-owned stores in Quezon City. Qualified SC and PWDs can work as guest relations representatives, assisting store teams with customer service at the counter and dining areas.

Aside from Quezon City, the Jollibee Group has collaborated with the local governments of Manila, Antipolo, Muntinlupa, Pasig, and the provincial government of Rizal to implement this inclusive employment program.

Steps to making good investments

1. Identify your reasons for investing.
“Is It retirement? Is it for your child’s education? Bagay dapat ang gagawin mong investment sa short-term and long-term goals mo (Your investments should be aligned with your short-term and long-term goals).”

Cuneta advised that it is best to know why you’re making an investment. Ask yourself what you’re preparing for.

 
2. Know when you need the results of your investment.
“Kung kailangan mo na ang pera next year (If you need the money next year), you should invest in something that will produce accessible dividends within that period. If you have a substantial amount of resources…, invest in long-term products that will also have a higher yield or profit.” 

Cuneta pointed out that knowing when you would need the income for your investments helps you narrow down which investments to make.


3. Let a financial adviser guide you.

“When you’re clear on why you’re investing and when you need the income from your investment, you now look for what to invest in. And that is where financial advisers come in. They are the people who can guide you and find an investment that is just right for your needs and your resources.”
She went on to compare a financial adviser to her manager who helps her choose the right movie projects, albums, and concerts.

 
4. Diversify your portfolio.

“All investments involve risks. The more risks an investment has, the higher the potential return. However, there is also a higher potential for loss. Kaya it is important to diversify your portfolio, which means investing in a variety of different assets. Gaya nga ng kasabihan na don’t put your eggs in one basket kasi baka mabasag silang lahat (Like they say in the aphorism, “Don’t put your eggs in one basket because they might all break at the same time.”).”
There are many types of investments, including stocks, bonds, real estate, and mutual funds -- each with its own risk and returns.


5. Having an insurance can help protect your investments.
“If you have health insurance, that will cover your medical and other expenses while your money continues to earn in your investments. Once you’re protected, you can already save, invest for wealth accumulation, which eventually will lead to wealth distribution or leaving a legacy to your family.”

When investing, having an insurance policy can serve as a safety net or backup plan to mitigate unforeseen problems.

The heat of the summer season pushes most to overuse cooling appliances, causing them to overheat and catch fire. With the recent El Nino hitting most parts of the Philippines with intense heat waves and increasing the need to use cooling appliances, many houses, especially those made of lighter materials, are in danger of going up in flames. 

This potential tragedy can cause people to lose everything they have in the blink of an eye, a tough blow that can turn their world upside down. 

Such is what happened to Jeann Rose Orongan and her family from Puerto Princesa City, Palawan. She and her family faced this unfortunate obstacle when a fire wiped out everything, they owned in February this year. Hope in times of crisis 
The situation began around 2 A.M. when a fire broke out in a neighboring barangay. BPI alerts businesses to a phishing scheme that targets their staff

“Cyberattacks against organizations do happen and it could cost millions in terms of data loss, financial impact, and operational disruption. Line managers, particularly those with access to critical data or tasked with critical transactions, face the biggest risk of whaling, that is why it’s important to conduct regular cybersecurity awareness training and attack simulations within the company. We must get everyone to understand that cybersecurity is a responsibility we all share and that it takes a collective effort to fight cyberthreats. Doing so will allow us to safely navigate the digital world while ensuring the company and employees are protected.” ~Jonathan John Paz, BPI Enterprise Information Security and Data Protection Officer


The Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) has issued a warning to businesses and the general public about the spread of executive phishing attacks, also known as whaling, which is a sophisticated social engineering scam that targets members of an organization. 

According to Jonathan John Paz, BPI Enterprise Information Security and Data Protection Officer, executive phishing or whaling can occur via emails and messaging apps such as Viber and WhatsApp, in which unscrupulous individuals pose as a senior management figure to induce employees to carry out fraudulent transactions or to divulge sensitive or confidential information. 




Paz urged the public to be alert and exercise caution with emails and attachments to protect themselves from this type of social engineering scams. He advised to follow these tips:
  • Verify the sender. Before taking any action, make sure that the sender’s name, email address, and contact number are correct. If you don’t normally receive an email or message from the sender, ask a person in authority to verify their legitimacy. 
  • Don’t engage. Don’t click on links or download attachments from suspicious senders. Don’t respond to their message either. 
  • Check for viruses. Take an extra step by scanning attachments for viruses before opening them. 
  • Report immediately. If you receive a message from a sender who you suspect is impersonating an executive of your company, report immediately to your company’s cybersecurity team. 

Furthermore, Paz urged companies to take a proactive approach to promoting cybersecurity awareness, instilling in their employees the mindset that cybersecurity is a shared responsibility, regardless of position, title, or tenure. 

According to a report by the Department of Information and Communications Technology, cyber incidents in the country increased by 62% in 2023, indicating the need for a more aggressive cybersecurity awareness campaign to safeguard Filipinos.
