Union Bank of the Philippines invites you to its 12th E-Media TalkTales to discuss how the UnionBank SME Business Banking helps MSMEs jumpstart their business through UPAY, their all in one fully integrated payment acceptance hub.

Union Bank of the Philippines 12th TalkTales: Critical Role of DigitizingPayments in Fast Evolving Market

Filipinos are now utilizing digital payments more than ever. Last month, the Banko Sentral ng Pilipinas reported that digital payments made up 20.1 percent of all transactions in 2020, more than double the figure from two years ago of 10 percent. This strong momentum is creating opportunities particularly for enterprising Filipinos who engage in e-commerce.

To help micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in the country capitalize on this growing trend, Union Bank of the Philippines (UnionBank), the region’s digital trailblazer and the country’s foremost bank for MSMEs, has launched a groundbreaking feature that will make e-payments easier and secure not only for customers but also for MSMEs—the new UPAY for MSME.

This was unveiled at the Bank's 12th E-TalkTales media event, wherein UnionBank Vice President and MSME Segment Head Jaypee Soliman, and UnionBank Merchant Acquiring and Payment Gateway Head Gerry Austria led discussions on the critical role of digitizing payments in the country's fast evolving market.

Soliman began the discussions by talking about the state of digital payments in the country, citing the significant growth in the number of Filipinos who utilize these payment solutions. This is an indication that Filipinos are now more open to the idea of becoming a cash-lite society.

“This shows how the consumers are now transacting digitally. They are ready. They are there. The number of Filipinos having e-wallets and bank accounts continue to grow. But the question is, are the MSMEs ready to accept digital payments?"

This is where UPAY comes in. UPAY is a groundbreaking digital payments solution designed to make acceptance of multiple payment options accessible to MSMEs. It offers a fully integrated, single platform payment collection complete with other features that can make inbound payments easier for entrepreneurs, including the option to generate payment links with multiple collection channels, and the option to generate InstaPay QRPH for digital and physical channels.

Union Bank of the Philippines 12th TalkTales: Critical Role of DigitizingPayments in Fast Evolving Market

What makes UPAY convenient for accepting payments is that customers can choose their preferred payment channel either via Unionbank Online, InstaPay, Other Digital Wallets, Credit/Debit Cards and even over-the-counter through UnionBank’s expansive network of partner channels nationwide.

"When we conceptualized UPAY for MSMEs, we wanted to do away with all the different hassles that the merchant is experiencing to set up his payments, one of which is having to connect to a point-of-sale system, having to have different devices, having to have to download different apps. Second, it's the efficiency in doing business. You don't need to be in your physical store to actually have a customer pay you. You can actually be vacationing somewhere else and someone wants to buy a product which they saw through your post on Instagram or Facebook. You can actually just create a payment link and send it to that customer, so it's very convenient for both the merchant and the customer." ~Gerry Austria, UnionBank Merchant Acquiring and Payment Gateway Head

Through the new feature, UnionBank wants to level the playing field for MSMEs by making the feature accessible to them, which was previously only available to the bigger merchants as part of enterprise platforms that are too technologically demanding and expensive for smaller players.

MapĂșa graduate student to represent the Philippines in international James Dyson Award

JDA PH Winner 2021

Mark Kennedy Bantugon, a young inventor from MapĂșa University, has been declared the lone standard-bearer of the Philippines to the international leg of the James Dyson Award 2021.

Bantugon joins the Top 20 shortlist of the global design competition with his product innovation, the Pili Seal, a sustainable and non-toxic sealant for aircraft made

from the waste material of Pili Tree Resin or spent or de-oiled resin.

His inclusion in the Top 20 international finalists is proof of his invention’s potential to address and solve genuine industry-wide issues, which mainly involve health, safety, and rising costs.

It also underscores the Pili Seal’s ability to help create an additional and sustainable income stream for Filipino farmers while promoting the upcycling of waste materials.

Before being shortlisted, the Materials Science and Engineering by Research graduate student’s Pili Seal invention was declared the National Winner of the Philippine leg of the James Dyson Award.

Bantugon plans to conduct further studies on the sealant to make it useful in various heavy industries like construction, land and water transportation, buildings, wood, and metal sheet roof applications.

More than 2,000 projects from 28 countries and regions worldwide competed for a slot in their respective national-level elimination rounds. Of the 2,000, 83 were declared national winners and runners-up. These were then judged in the pre-qualifying stage of the international competition where only 20 were shortlisted by a panel of Dyson engineers and designers.

The James Dyson Award global winners will be announced on November 17, 2021. International Winners will receive a £30,000 or Php2 million grant to help fund their projects.

Urban planner, cycling advocate, and founder of active transport advocacy group MNL Moves, Aldrin Pelicano.

Bike enthusiasts will also enjoy trying out Gravel/Adventure bikes, Utility bikes, E-bikes, Triathlon bikes, Tandem bikes, Park bikes and Kids bikes.

Urban planner, cycling advocate, and founder of active transport advocacy group MNL Moves, Aldrin Pelicano shares with us tips to anyone before going on a ride or who wants to give biking a start. Here are his must-haves:
  • Helmets. “Investing in a good helmet is always worth it,” says Aldrin. “When choosing a helmet, always look for the Consumer Product Safety Committee (CPSC) sticker inside.  This ensures you’ll be offered a high level of protection if you do end up in a crash.”
This half- dome bike helmet with an aerodynamic design, smoothly curves around your head for great fit and protection as well as  the  detachable mask  and goggle with HD lenses with  high density sponge  and anti-slip band.

  • Bike Lights.  It is important to see and be seen when you’re out on the road, and Aldrin advises us to “choose a white bike light in front and red bike light for the back.  High visibility (hi-viz) clothes or vest and straps can also help for you to be visible especially in low-light conditions or at night.”
Illuminate your night rides with this all-purpose and easy to install Plastic Bike LED Head and Tail Light Each set features headlight, taillight, front lamp stand, and a rear lamp stand that serves as warning lights.

  • Repair Kits. “Don’t go out on a ride, whether short or long, without your tool kit,” says Aldrin. “A good kit should include spare tube/s and/or patch kit, pump, tire levers and cycling multi-tool.”
Be equipped with safety and protection with this AXCS Outdoor bicycle repair kit bag that includes a  bicycle pump, tire patches, lever, and file, combination tool, a glue, rubber tubes, and a  pin.

  • A Bike bag – “It’s a good idea to bring essentials like IDs, money, mask, face shield (if you will go to an indoor place, closed venue), food and water,” says Aldrin. And find yourself a good bag for all your stuff.
Be the coolest cycling buddy with this multi-purpose bicycle top tube bag. Features a phone holder, an insulated side pocket, a reflectorized strip for safety precaution, and a transparent PVC cellphone compartment.

  • A Water bottle – “If your bike has eyelets,” says Aldrin. “it would be good to get a bottle cage so you can bring water bottles for hydration.”
  • Wear as you ride – How do you dress the part?  Some advice from Aldrin: “You don’t have to wear cycling jerseys to make trips on a bicycle.  As long as it’s comfortable and will help you ride safely, any clothes should do it.  Also, “don’t underestimate the sun so it’s also good to wear some protection like arm sleeves and sunglasses.”

Bike lovers and  enthusiasts, like Aldrin, can visit The SM Store Men’s Accessories Department to check out their latest bike collections, as well as accessories, safety kits and gears, and other must-haves that can be used  while going on a ride.
