4 ways to turn passions into something valuable and powerful

4 ways to turn passions into something valuable and powerful

There are so many stressors these days. Work, finances, and the welfare of their family are just some of the things that induce anxiety. Their only solace is their passion, which ranges from creating and consuming content to playing mobile games.

Reports have called millennials the “burnout generation.” This is further expanded by the 2020 Deloitte Global Millennial Survey, which found that 57% of Filipino millennials feel anxious or stressed all or most of the time. The 2022 report found that 45% of millennials around the world feel “burned out due to the intensity/demands of their working environments.”

With all the stressors hounding millennials every day, it’s important to turn passions into something valuable and powerful. Here are four ways to do that:

Make time for it.
Face it, there’s always something that needs to be done. It’s important to set boundaries between work and leisure because a mind must be well-rested in order to function well in the office. It’s not enough to simply find time for one’s passion. These days, it’s about making it. Set a rule that after 6 PM, work notifications must be switched off. The hours after that must be dedicated to rest, spending time with loved ones, and hobbies.

Connect with like-minded people.
A group of friends who share the same passion will most likely encourage it. Friends who enjoy the same bands can go to gigs together, while gamers can join tournaments or just play together. Film buffs can have movie nights where they can discuss their favorite scenes. There are communities that cater to every passion, from Facebook groups to apps like Goodreads for books, Letterboxd for movies, and Reddit for anything under the sun.

Share it with the world.
Social media has made the world smaller, allowing everyone to reach bigger audiences. Creators can share their work on platforms like Instagram and TikTok, which can build a following. While the point of pursuing one’s passion is a break from the monotony of work, this could lead to freelancing gigs or even a change in career.

Have the right device.
The right tool can turn a simple hobby into something more powerful. Samsung’s Galaxy M33 5G and M23 5G are great companions for young professionals who want to take their passions to the next level, especially content creation and mobile games.

Both smartphones are equipped with a multi-camera system to capture memories. The Galaxy M33 5G and M23 5G’s suite of lenses is bannered by the 50MP Main camera, which takes photos and videos in clear detail. The smartphones’ 6.6” displays with Full HD+ technology made the gaming experience richer. Lags are virtually undetectable with the 120Hz refresh rate. There’s space for everything since the smartphones have 128GB of internal storage, which can be expanded by up to 1TB with a microSD card.

Both devices are available at a discounted price on Samsung.com and other online platforms this June. The Galaxy M33 5G is priced at 16,990 SRP, down from its original price of PHP 19,490 SRP in Blue, Brown, and Green. Meanwhile, the Galaxy M23 5G is available for PHP 15,490 SRP, down from its original price of PHP 17,990 SRP in Light Blue, Deep Green, and Orange Copper.

Becoming successful at something you're passionate about takes time, persistence, and drive. Put these pieces together and you'll be well on your way to doing what you love, gaining more control and freedom in your life, and unleashing the genuine power that's within you all along.

A Talk With An Esports Dad

"Time is a luxury, and having it well spent is better than just being there doing nothing. I have been growing companies since before had children, but having children made me realize that I was and am practically the same on both ends. I give my children, as with my team, the same opportunities to speak and be heard, make their own mistakes and learn, and know I am here to mentor them whenever possible. I will support my children if they choose to be engaged in esports or content-creation. Like any other endeavor, it requires passion and perseverance. And as long as they have it to keep pushing forward. I sometimes do not get it right the first time. But I usually remember that I have a vital role to play. And step-up whenever it is needed. I believe I have a role to play in it, and everyone else has to do theirs. This will ensure that the industry will thrive and prosper. If there is one thing I would like my children to mirror, allow me to quote, Don't stop when you're tired. Stop when you're done." ~Mitch Esguerra, CEO of Southeast Asia at Galaxy Racer

Given this, fathers always want to be the best example to their children. Undeniably, children mirror who they admire, and in most cases, it is their fathers they seem to mirror the most. They revere them, follow them, and wish to be more like them. It is an intrinsic quality that fathers are emulated by their children.

Mitch Esguerra is a testament to this. Despite his demanding role as the CEO of Southeast Asia at Galaxy Racer, the most prominent esports, lifestyle, and content organization, he remains the foundation of his family of seven (including their great-grandmother and their beloved nanny).

With three children, a creative adolescent, a pre-schooler princess, and a toddler, he carefully manages his time with them as he relates.

He describes himself as an authoritative parent, solving problems (together) with his children, setting clear rules and expectations, and with open communication and natural consequences.

Mitch shares that his experiences as a parent are not a step away from how he manages the many startup companies, including Galaxy Racer.

As a father, Mitch is a simple man who prefers to travel and have unique experiences with his children, allowing them to recognize how big the world is to explore. And it is indeed a big world out there as Mitch himself experiences leading the establishment, growth, and scale of Galaxy Racer's regional operations across the Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and Indonesia. Aiming to create Galaxy Racer, a transmedia powerhouse in the region's esports, gaming, and content-creating industry.

Being at the helm of the largest gaming and lifestyle organization, en route to the largest transmedia powerhouse in the world. A piece of advice from one father to another with children who are into esports and content creation.

According to Mitch, being a father is not always rainbows and butterflies.

A similar reality he faces with Galaxy Racer and its expansive ecosystem.

BPI SEAL empowers micro and small enterprises for sustainable growth

“It’s no secret that the past two years have been extra tough for the entire business community, most especially for the Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs) which faced multiple challenges including the lack of funds to maintain their businesses after a series of lockdowns. To help address the pressing need for an intervention and spur growth to the MSE sector, we are excited to kick-off the pilot run of the BPI SEAL-SEGA.” ~Owen Cammayo, BPI Foundation Executive Director

BPI Foundation, the social development arm of the Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) today, launched a program for the development of local micro and small enterprises (MSEs) called BPI Small Enterprise Acceleration Lab (SEAL), with its first track, Small Enterprise Growth Agenda (SEGA), in partnership with Bayan Academy.

BPI SEAL-SEGA is a search for start-up businesses that are ready to develop their viable business ventures.  This project is designed to meet the needs of start-up businesses through training, mentoring sessions, and cash grants. The training program aims to help the startups assess their enterprise’s products, services, operations, and marketing and assist them in developing their start-up enterprise development plan.

Photo shows, clockwise from upper left: DTI Undersecretary of Regional Operations Group Blesila A. Lantayona, BPI Foundation Executive Director Owen Cammayo, Start Up Village President Carlo Calimon, and Bayan Academy President and Chairman Prof. Francisco “Jay” Bernardo.

In 2020, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) reported that 99.51% of all businesses across the country belong to the micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSME) sector.  Micro enterprises account for 88.77%, while 10.25% are small enterprises.

According to a study conducted by the Philippine Institute for Development Studies in 2018, this sector continues to struggle in the value chain, primarily due to lack of access to finance, labor and technical and management know-how. SEAL-SEGA aims to help bridge the gaps.

“Startups proved to us that crisis can also be a strong driving force for creativity and innovation. If this new normal has taught us anything, it is harnessing the benefits of digital technologies and transformation that could be an opportunity to create sustainable and adaptable businesses.” ~Blesila A. Lantayona, DTI Undersecretary of Regional Operations Group

Fifty (50) MSEs will be chosen to join the boot camps and showcase their plans through a business pitch to a panel of judges.  The Top 1–10 will receive a cash grant of P100,000 each, while the Top 11–20 will bring home Php50,000 each.

“BPI SEAL SEGA is dedicated to helping startups sustain, develop and scale up their businesses. We are here to be part of the nation-building efforts that SMEs have been providing us.” ~Prof. Francisco “Jay” Bernardo, Bayan Academy President and Chairman

The business challenge is open to start-up entrepreneurs who are 18 years old and above, and whose enterprise’s asset size is Php1 million and below. The application period will run until July 15, 2022.

SM Development Corporation officially launched Start-up Boot Camp

Empowering resident entrepreneurs. SM Development Corporation (SMDC) officially launched its Start-up Boot Camp with a forum on how to grow and start a business, held last May 28 at the Grass Residences Clubhouse in Quezon City. Facilitated by top entrepreneurs from GoNegosyo, the SMDC's Start-up Boot Camp was attended by 56 residents from various SMDC properties. Championing an entrepreneurial mindset, SMDC plans to bring its Start-up Boot camp to its other developments to equip its residents with the right tools and knowledge to launch and grow their passion projects.

SM Development Corporation Health and Wellness Caravan

Promoting Health and Wellbeing. True to its commitment in building happy, healthy, safe, and thriving communities, SM Development Corporation (SMDC) continues to champion the wellbeing of its residents and neighboring communities through The Good Guys Health and Wellness caravan. In collaboration with SM Foundation and Red Cross Philippines, more than 200 residents of Barangay South Triangle in Quezon City were given free medical check-ups, laboratory tests, and medicines last May 31. This year, The Good Guys Health and Wellness Caravan has already provided health checks to more than 1,500 individuals, and has administered more than 600 COVID-19 vaccine booster shots.

SMDC: Giving Residents Opportunities to Give Back to the Community

"It was in 2020, the onset of the pandemic when one of our neighbors here at Trees Residences invited us to join a bazaar. We noticed that many of our residents here in Trees were senior citizens. They're the ones vulnerable to COVID-19 so they had very limited movement, even within our community. We assisted them with everything they needed. We went out of our way for them and helped them purchase their medicines and provided them with services that were not available here at the bazaar. What we were able to build here is not just a customer-seller relationship, but a bigger, deeper one. We are now neighbors-turned-families, and that's what I love most about being a volunteer and a resident of my SMDC community. I look at SMDC not only as a property, but it’s also a community for everyone. SMDC is a complete package—from the amenities and facilities fit for everyone to the programs for the whole family not only for the children but for others especially the seniors and the PWDs. It feels so good to be part of SMDC’s The Good Guys Volunteers program. It brings a different kind of purpose and fulfillment to be able to help others in your own simple way." ~Loida Geniblazo-Secillano, A Resident of SMDC’s Trees Residences

The recent global health crisis impacted the lives of many but it has sparked solidarity, unity, and cooperation among Filipinos. During this trying time, we saw a full display of the spirit of bayanihan and the value of malasakit, as people stepped up to extend a helping hand to those who are in need.

SM Development Corporation (SMDC) initiated various programs to provide assistance to its residents and neighboring communities amidst the difficult situation. The company’s community efforts have become an avenue for its residents and employees to volunteer and be of service to others.

Loida Geniblazo-Secillano, a resident of SMDC’s Trees Residences, realized that she had a lot of time on her hands when COVID-19 struck. Since their construction company had to pause operations,  she wanted to do something to keep herself busy, and her mind off the anxiety that the situation brought.

Loida Geniblazo-Secillano, A Resident of SMDC’s Trees Residences

Loida, a food technologist by profession and now a volunteer and the head coordinator of the resident entrepreneurs at SMDC’s Trees Residences. Loida joined SMDC’s The Good Guys Weekend Market, which she describes as a life-changing experience as she found new friends, as well as new opportunities to earn and help people during the lockdown.

Loida says that she is thankful and inspired to belong to a community of good people, who truly care and have a genuine concern for others. She believes that the strong sense of community and family at SMDC’s Trees Residences made it possible for them to get through the most difficult moments of the health crisis.

Being at the forefront of community building, SMDC has created programs that inspired the Good Guys in every community. SMDC employees and residents have been helping out in various ways during the pandemic, keeping the spirit of Bayanihan alive in every development.

Super Dads share how Fatherhood has Transformed their Careers

In celebration of Father’s Day, three fathers from Shopee, the leading e-commerce platform in Southeast Asia and Taiwan, share how fatherhood has allowed them to become better versions of themselves, including at the workplace.
  • Martin Yu, Director of Shopee Philippines
  • Michael, SPX Rider for two years
  • Mark, Shopee Seller
By embracing their roles as fathers, Martin, Michael, and Mark have come to understand better how to serve their customers and their teams in their respective roles as employees of Shopee and partners of SPX.

Fathers provide, protect, and persevere at home and at work. In celebration of Father’s Day, three fathers from Shopee, the leading e-commerce platform in Southeast Asia and Taiwan, share how fatherhood has allowed them to become better versions of themselves, including at the workplace.

Martin: Evolving as a Leader and as a Father

“When Shopee started in the Philippines, I had to be more of a coach, but as we grew and built up a larger team, I had to adjust my leadership style. I tried to foster a culture where my team is encouraged to speak up and contribute their ideas and initiatives. Now, my role is to ensure these align with our bigger business objectives. I encourage my children to try new things and try to be their buddy. I talk to my sons like we are friends now because they are developing their interests, and I want to encourage them to discover who they want to be in this fast-changing world. Looking ahead, I know I must adapt even more as they become teenagers and young adults. My sons are still young, but I think it’s never too early to teach them the value of meaningful work that significantly impacts society and empowers them to pursue a career path that offers that opportunity.”

Shopee Philippines Director Martin Yu has been leading teams to help businesses shift online through Shopee since 2017 and has seen the platform grow. As a father of two young boys, Martin has observed a common aspect between being a father and a leader that he now applies every day: the need to evolve.

As a Father, Martin is mindful of how fast his sons are growing up and how he needs to similarly adapt his parenting style to keep up with their changing needs.

Martin’s ultimate hope is that his work will inspire his kids to pursue impactful careers.

Michael: Building more Meaningful Relationships

“Before the pandemic, I planned to return to Taiwan to continue providing for my family. I am grateful that my job as a Shopee Xpress partner rider allows me to come home to my children everyday. Being able to play an active role in their lives has given my life and my job more meaning and purpose. My children are my biggest inspiration in life. It is very meaningful for me that I now get to fulfill my role as a father in a better way.

Before coming to work for Shopee Xpress as a partner rider two years ago, Michael worked as an overseas Filipino worker in Taiwan, just like his father. Growing up, he found it difficult to form a solid connection with his father since their relationship mainly consisted of online video calls. When Michael became a father four years ago, he knew he wanted to be a more present figure in his daughter’s life.

As a Shopee Xpress partner rider, not only is Michael able to provide for his family’s needs, but he can also play a more active role in the lives of his two children, aged two and four.

One of the things Michael is most proud of in life, is being a present father in the lives of his children.

Mark: Giving His Best as a Father and a Seller

“Nine years ago, I fought to become a father, and I continue to fight for my family every day. When I started my online business, I struggled to get orders, but I persevered and gave my all for them. Selling through Shopee has allowed my family to reach many milestones like building a home and a warehouse. Everything I do, whether as a father or a business owner, is driven by my love for my wife and daughters. Till today, I continue to give my best every day, not just for my family, but also for my customers.”

Since becoming a father, Mark has learned what it truly means to work hard and persevere. He nearly lost his daughter nine years ago to biliary atresia, a rare condition that affected her liver and required her to undergo an expensive procedure abroad. By selling customized pillows on Shopee’s platform, Mark has been able to provide for his family’s needs, including his daughter’s regular medication.

By embracing their roles as fathers, Martin, Michael, and Mark have come to understand better how to serve their customers and their teams in their respective roles as employees of Shopee and partners of Shopee Xpress. Their meaningful careers have enabled them to make a difference in the lives of others – both at home and in the workplace.
