Ballet Manila’s Ibong Adarna takes flight anew at the Areté stage in Ateneo

“Ibong Adarna is one of Ballet Manila’s most requested offsite performances. This year, it already had two shows at Jose Rizal Coliseum in Laguna, and now the production is bound to return to Areté in Ateneo before continuing its way to Iloilo. Every time we bring Ibong Adarna to a new audience, we discover something new about the story and the characters. That is what makes it special. It remains familiar to many Filipinos, but ballet allows us to experience the story in a different way.” ~Lisa Macuja Elizalde, Ballet Manila’s CEO and Artistic Director
Ballet Manila re-stages Ibong Adarna at Hyundai Hall, Areté, Ateneo de Manila University on October 9 and 10.

A beloved Filipino story known and cherished by generations is set to take flight once again, this time through the expressive world of ballet.

This October, Ballet Manila brings back Gerardo Francisco Jr.’s Ibong Adarna, reimagining the classic tale of an enchanted bird, royal brothers, forbidden love, and a journey to find a cure into a captivating production of music, movement, and dance.

One of Ballet Manila’s most beloved and frequently performed productions, Ibong Adarna will be staged at Hyundai Hall, Areté, Ateneo de Manila University in Quezon City, on October 9 at 7:30 p.m. and October 10 at 5 p.m.

The ballet follows the mythical Adarna, a magical bird whose enchanting song possesses the power to heal the sick. When King Fernando of the Kingdom of Berbanya is struck by an incurable illness, his three sons — Don Pedro, Don Diego, and Don Juan — embark on a difficult quest to find the legendary bird and bring it home to save their father. According to the kingdom’s promise, the prince who successfully captures the Adarna will inherit the throne.

For its Areté run, Ballet Manila will introduce a new set of principal performers from its powerhouse roster. Shaira Comeros takes on the role of Ibong Adarna, with Mark Sumaylo as Don Pedro, Rafael Perez as Don Juan, and Romeo Peralta as Don Diego. The alternate cast features Jessica Pearl Dames as Ibong Adarna, Juan Angelo De Leon as Don Juan, Ralp John Balagot as Don Pedro, and Sean Pelegrin as Don Diego.

Ibong Adarna continues to establish itself as a Filipino ballet classic. While Ballet Manila has presented the production numerous times in different venues, every revival offers a fresh interpretation, shaped by the evolving artistry and personalities of its dancers.

Bringing Ibong Adarna to Areté reflects Ballet Manila’s broader mission of bringing people to ballet and ballet to the people. By presenting its productions beyond traditional theater venues and bringing them closer to different communities and cities, the company creates more opportunities for audiences to experience live ballet and discover the art form through stories that are already deeply familiar within Filipino culture.

For audiences who first encountered Ibong Adarna through school, books, or childhood stories, Ballet Manila offers a fresh opportunity to experience the classic tale on stage. The production combines a familiar narrative with music, movement, complex characters, and the expressive artistry of Ballet Manila’s dancers.

Catch Ibong Adarna at Hyundai Hall, Areté, Ateneo de Manila University on October 9 and 10 only. Tickets are available through Ticketworld at www.premier.ticketworld.com.ph.

Ballet Manila concludes PRIMA season with La Bayadere

"Ballet Manila is the only company in the Philippines with this kind of superior ensemble. That is why it deserves its place in our 31st performance season. That made me proud—not just of Renata and Kimin, but of our dancers, our school, and our thirty-one years of building a company that can hold its own on the global stage." ~Lisa Macuja Elizalde, Ballet Manila Founder and Artistic Director

A temple dancer's devotion. A warrior's split heart. A priest's ravenous desire. Their story alternates between passion and betrayal, life and the afterlife. A rare full-length production of Marius Petipa's timeless classic, La Bayadère, will take place at the Aliw Theater on August 14 at 8:00 p.m., marking the culmination of Ballet Manila's PRIMA Season. and 5:00 p.m. on August 15 and 16.

Set in ancient India, La Bayadère tells the story of Nikiya, a temple dancer bound by love, and Solor, a warrior torn between duty and passion. Their fates are linked to Gamzatti, the rajah's daughter, and the High Brahmin, whose aspirations lead to tragedy and betrayal. The ballet is set in opulent courts and sacred temples before disappearing into the ethereal Kingdom of the Shades.

The founder and artistic director of Ballet Manila, Lisa Macuja Elizalde, returned to the Philippines from Russia forty years ago this year. Being the first foreign soloist of the Kirov Ballet, which is now known as Mariinsky Ballet, was her greatest achievement there. Presenting this full-length masterpiece as PRIMA's crown jewel has enormous personal significance.  Among the great "white ballets," she says, are La Bayadère, Giselle, and Swan Lake.

These classic pieces are known for their surreal scenes where ballerinas dressed in white move in perfect unison, exposing every line and detail. For Lisa, La Bayadère represents the highest level of expertise. The Kingdom of the Shades scene in Act III is considered the pinnacle of artistic skill and discipline worldwide. She is confident, tho, that Ballet Manila's corps de ballet is ready.

The production is led by two of the biggest stars of the Mariinsky Ballet, Renata Shakirova and Kimin Kim. In Don Quixote (2025), their well-known partnership captivated Manila. They reappear in familiar roles as Solor and Nikiya.

"Every part I feel deep inside me. All the emotions of Nikiya, I feel I live through. Onstage, we believe in each other completely. That trust allows us to dance not only with technique, but with emotion. I love seeing their eyes burning with excitement and watching them discover us in new roles." ~Renata Shakirova, Mariinsky Prima Ballerina

Alongside her, Kimin Kim—renowned for his gravity-defying leaps—sees Solor as a role defined by emotional truth rather than technical feats.

"Technique is supposed to be there already from the very beginning. I try to make it all look easy, so the technique doesn't look like work. More important is that I can show emotion and the depth of the character. From my very first rehearsal, I felt as though we had already been dancing together for years. That family atmosphere makes performing here unforgettable. I hope Renata and I can return to Ballet Manila and the Philippines again and again." ~Kimin Kim, Mariinsky Prima Ballerina

Mariinsky prima ballerina Renata Shakirova gives the character vulnerable humanity and embraces Nikiya's emotional journey. Their partnership, built on complete trust, transforms choreography into conversation.

For Lisa, collaborations like these continue to elevate Ballet Manila. She recalls audience members from Korea and Germany traveling to Manila for Don Quixote, then praising Ballet Manila alongside the world's finest companies.

Renata says she gladly returns for Ballet Manila's family atmosphere and the warmth of Filipino audiences.

As PRIMA draws to a close, La Bayadère stands as both a showcase of world-class ballet and a testament to what happens when extraordinary artistry meets genuine collaboration. Ballet Manila invites audiences to experience a rare masterpiece brought to life by internationally celebrated artists alongside a company proudly standing on the global stage.

Ballet Manila brings back global ballet superstars Renata Shakirova and Kimin Kim in La Bayadère

“We are very excited to welcome Renata and Kimin back to Ballet Manila. Their performances in Don Quixote were truly unforgettable, and the response from Filipino audiences was overwhelming. It was a delight to see our audiences embrace them so warmly, and I know many have been looking forward to seeing them perform here again. Renata and Kim’s extensive experience with La Bayadère promises Filipinos audiences a moving and authentic interpretation of Marius Petipa’s enduring masterpiece. We hope that by the end of the show, the audience will have a renewed love for ballet.” ~Lisa Macuja Elizalde, Ballet Manila’s Founder and Artistic Director
Mariinsky Ballet principal dancers Renata Shakirova and Kimin Kim return for Ballet Manila's La Bayadere

Filipino audiences will witness the remarkable and well-known artistry, passion, and technical mastery of two of the world's most famous ballet performers when they return to the Philippine stage.

The Mariinsky Ballet's principal dancers, Renata Shakirova and Kimin Kim, will return to Ballet Manila in August to revive the timeless classic La Bayadère. The performance will take place at the Aliw Theater on August 14 at 8 PM and August 15 and 16 at 5 PM.

Significantly, their return advances Ballet Manila's long-standing objective of bringing excellent ballet closer to Filipino audiences by giving local theatergoers a rare chance to see internationally recognized performers in the country.

Kim and Shakirova's exceptional qualifications are advantageous to the production. One of the Mariinsky's best prima ballerinas, Shakirova is a native of Tashkent, Uzbekistan, and is renowned for her musicality, dramatic depth, and commanding presence. Early on, her exceptional talent was identified, and she has already won the coveted 2025 Benois de la Danse award, also known as the "Ballet Oscar."

However, despite beginning ballet at a relatively late age—roughly ten years old—Kim became the first foreign male principal dancer in the history of the Mariinsky Ballet.  He is well known for his remarkable athleticism and accurate technique. As a duo, they are equally impressive, having won Russia-Kultura TV's Grand Ballet competition in 2016.

For the couple, La Bayadère, a well-known ballet masterpiece, is nothing new. The tragic romance between the warrior Solor and the temple dancer Nikiya (bayadère) is the main focus of the story, which is set in ancient India. The High Brahmin (high priest), who is also in love with Nikiya, asks the Rajah to kill Solor after discovering their relationship. But his plan is foiled when the Rajah chooses to murder Nikiya instead. Both this world and the afterlife are included in the classic melodramatic love triangle.

At the Mariinsky Theatre, Kim regularly portrays the noble warrior Solor, and Shakirova has portrayed both the Nikya and the regal Gamzatti, showcasing her versatility and garnering international acclaim.

Ballet Manila Lisa Macuja Elizalde brings creative vision to Ballet Manila's first full-length Paquita in the Philippines

“I have always wondered where this beautiful ballet excerpt comes from in the context with the story of Paquita. The ballet excerpt is always described as the culmination of the love story of a gypsy girl Paquita with a French officer Lucien. I concluded that it would be exciting and perfectly manageable to present a two-act classical ballet to the Filipino audience. I read the lengthy text in a book about rare Russian ballets that included Paquita. I listened to the music of the full-length ballet by Anna-Marie Holmes, Kevin Gaile, and Li-Mei Liang. I started to build the ballet chapter by chapter in my head. I combined and interchanged music pieces. Included some of the famous variations but to be danced in the beginning and middle portions of the ballet, instead of having all the variations in the end divertissement the way it is normally performed. Personally, this particular world premiere of Paquita is like a baby of mine. When you create a new full-length ballet almost from scratch, it is like giving birth to a living, breathing creation. It is a ballet that will be uniquely Ballet Manila’s. A part of our classical ballet legacy!” ~Lisa Macuja Elizalde

Lisa Macuja Elizalde's unequaled creative vision takes center stage when dance Manila presents the Philippines' first full-length performance of Paquita, a courageous and historic step that exemplifies her unwavering commitment to elevating classical dance in the country. Mark Sumaylo and Abigail Oliveiro will be the principal dancers, with Shamira Drapete and Jos David Andes performing as solos. The historic run begins on June 19 at 8:00 p.m. at the Aliw Theatre in Pasay City. followed by 5:00 p.m. The shows take place on June 20 and 21.

Ballet Manila artistic director and CEO Lisa Macuja-Elizalde

The route to this full-length show began in March 2025, when Paquita's divertissement was performed at Ballet Manila's Pearl Gala celebration. Macuja Elizalde became more curious after seeing the performance. At its core, Paquita is a love story about self-discovery and success, which Macuja Elizalde hopes would strike a chord with local viewers. The plot is around a young Romani woman in Spain who saves the life of a French lieutenant, Lucien, from a governor's assassination plan. Along the way, she learns about her own aristocratic background, allowing the couple to transcend tight social barriers and marry in a happy ending that many Filipinos like.

At its core, Paquita is a love story about self-discovery and accomplishment, which Macuja Elizalde hopes will resonate with local audiences. The plot is around a young Romani woman in Spain who saves the life of a French lieutenant, Lucien, from a governor's assassination attempt. Along the way, she discovers her own royal lineage, allowing the couple to overcome strict social obstacles and marry in a happy ending that many Filipinos prefer.

When Macuja Elizalde began investigating the history of the ballet fragment and reading it in full, she decided to perform the entire piece. While Ballet Manila's production honors Paquita's classical roots, Macuja Elizalde deliberately avoided watching earlier versions of the ballet to ensure her choreography was entirely original. Instead, she immersed herself in studies and music, creating her own version.

Drawing on these elements, Macuja Elizalde developed an interpretation that balances tradition with her own artistic preferences. Nonetheless, she stated that the true creative process was only fully realized in the studio, in collaboration with her dancers. Working closely with her crew has helped to enhance Ballet Manila's Russian Vaganova base. Macuja Elizalde noted that the company's 40-person ensemble is excellent for presenting demanding classical choreography. She also thanked her leading ladies, Abigail Oliveiro and Shamira Drapete, who are both making their debuts as the titular character and "dancing her so well."

Oliveiro's debut as Paquita under Macuja Elizalde's direction was both exciting and collaborative. The position also allows Oliveiro to showcase a unique aspect of her talent.

“It is always a good experience, and she is very clear in what she wants while keeping an open mind. I try to listen and observe what Ma'am Lisa wants from the ballet, character, or scene so I can understand her vision and fulfill it. I realized I had to tap into my more playful side which, dare I say, is not a common theme in a lot of my repertoire. So I’m certainly enjoying being playful.” ~Abigail Oliveiro

Finally, Macuja Elizalde regards Paquita as more than just a performance; it is an extension of her 40-year legacy in Philippine ballet.  And, like the explosive performance, she hopes it will increase Filipinos' appreciation for the arts.

Ballet Manila celebrates love and triumph with historic full-length world premiere of Paquita

“Quite like a soap opera, with twists and turns that are amusing and entertaining which is perfect for Filipinos who love a great story or telenovela. When I finally read it in full, I decided that it would be exciting and perfectly manageable to present a two-act classical ballet to the Filipino audience. I started to build the ballet chapter by chapter in my head. But the actual creation didn’t happen until I was in the studio in front of the dancers. I hope the audience will laugh at the comedic scenes and swoon in the romantic ones; as well as stand up and scream during the technically difficult portions! I hope the audience comes out of the theater smiling and humming the music.” ~Lisa Macuja Elizalde

Ballet Manila principal dancers Abigail Oliveiro and Joshua Enciso

Filipino viewers have traditionally enjoyed tales of intense passion, hidden identities, and arduous triumph. Ballet Manila is now bringing these concepts to life in a historic event: the country's first full-length performance of the classical masterwork Paquita. The company's founder and artistic director, Lisa Macuja Elizalde, is choreographing the production, which will begin at 8:00 p.m. on June 19 at the Aliw Theater in Pasay City. & June 20–21 at 5:00 p.m.

Paquita is rarely performed in its full, despite being an essential component of classical ballet. Lisa also believes that Filipinos will find it very relevant due to the tragic narrative. Lisa describes the narrative as “quite like a soap opera, with twists and turns that are amusing and entertaining which is perfect for Filipinos who love a great story or telenovela.”

The plot, set in Spain, revolves around a young Romani woman who stops a governor from executing Lucien, a French lieutenant. Along the way, she discovers her own aristocratic heritage, which helps the couple overcome rigid social norms and get married in a happy ending that appeals to many Filipinos.

Paquita's big divertissement at Ballet Manila's Pearl Gala event in March 2025 set the stage for this historic production. Lisa recalled getting interested in learning more about the story behind the ballet footage. Even though the show honors its classical roots, Macuja Elizalde deliberately avoided watching earlier performances in order to keep her choreography entirely original.

Her close cooperation with her crew has reinforced Ballet Manila's strong Russian ballet foundation. Lisa noted that the company's 40-person ensemble is the perfect size to handle the challenging, intricate choreography. Joshua Enciso and Abigail Oliveiro, two talented lead dancers, and Shamira Drapete and Jos David Andes, two solos, alternate as the central protagonists in this show. Together, they bring fresh beauty to one of the most amazing classical ballet performances by capturing the dual spirit of Paquita and Lucien.

So I’m certainly enjoying being playful.” ~Abigail Oliveiro, Principal Dancers

Under Lisa's guidance, Oliveiro has found taking on Paquita's position to be incredibly rewarding and cooperative. Furthermore, the role offers Oliveiro a special chance to showcase a particular facet of her creative skills. Ultimately, the creative team and performers hope that the show will excite and inspire viewers.

The Philippine ballet scene will reach another milestone with the historic world premiere of Paquita on June 19 at 8:00 p.m., June 20 & 21 at 5:00 p.m. Keep up-to-date with Ballet Manila’s schedule of performances and celebration events by visiting Ballet Manila’s website www.balletmanila.com.ph or Ticketworld page www.ticketworld.com.ph

Ballet Manila launches the PRIMA Performance Season with the iconic fairy tale classic Sleeping Beauty, revitalized by the kiss of true love

“What excites me in this production is how Sleeping Beauty finally completes our Princess Trilogy. It feels like all the stories we’ve been telling are coming together in one magical universe. In this iteration of Sleeping Beauty, Aurora will be joined by Cinderella and Snow White on stage, so it’s really fun to think about having them together in the stage. It is such a delight that we are performing with the Manila Symphony Orchestra, playing the original music of Tchaikovsky makes it even more special and I look forward to sharing this with everyone.” ~Lisa Macuja Elizalde, CEO and Artistic Director of Ballet Manila

A nation waits, a princess sleeps, and a curse persists until love prevails. Ballet Manila's PRIMA Performance Season will begin in March with Sleeping Beauty, the final piece of the Princess Trilogy Series. 8:00 p.m. on March 13. and viewers can witness Aurora's transition from enchantment to wakefulness on March 14 and 15 at 5:00 p.m. in the Aliw Theater in Pasay City. Every concert will include the Manila Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Maestro Alexander Vikulov.

Through dance, Ballet Manila's version brings the stories of fairy-tale princesses that have been passed down through the ages to life. With every step and turn, the company has imitated the elegance, innocence, and kindness of the beloved princesses. The CEO and Artistic Director of Ballet Manila, Lisa Macuja Elizalde, will lead and choreograph this season's Sleeping Beauty.

Lisa sees the end of Sleeping Beauty as a happy time and is delighted by the other princesses' special appearances. Additionally, the Princess Trilogy ends at a pivotal point. The Manila Symphony Orchestra, which is quietly celebrating its centennial, serves as a reminder of the cooperative role that music and dance have played in shaping Philippine culture.

Maan Hontiveros, head of the Manila Symphony Orchestra, believes this milestone serves as a reminder that music nurtures the soul and leaves a lasting legacy when paired with ballet.

Since 2011, Ballet Manila and the Manila Symphony Orchestra have collaborated, yet their support for one another has never diminished.

“Lisa has been a steadfast supporter of the orchestra, and her vision has helped bring this partnership to life in ways that honor both tradition and innovation. Lisa has always been in the life of Manila Symphony Orchestra. While there was a hiatus during the pandemic, it was very timely that we’re back doing a joint performance once again as we celebrate our 100th year. We’re grateful to Lisa and Fred (Elizalde) who are ever-present in our performances.” ~Maan Hontiveros, Manila Symphony Orchestra President

The Princess Trilogy climax with Sleeping Beauty not only wraps up Ballet Manila's massive story arc but also honors the collaboration between live music and ballet. Viewers are encouraged to see how ballet and orchestra collaborate to continue using timeless talent to shape the Philippine cultural stage when the curtain lowers.

A legacy fulfilled: Lisa Macuja Elizalde marks 40th homecoming celebration with a season of curated performances and a landmark collaboration with The Dawn

“Forty years ago, I came home with a mission to make ballet part of Filipino life. To see that vision continue through Ballet Manila and the PRIMA performance season is deeply meaningful not just for me but for everyone in the company. It proves that ballet can endure, adapt, and belong to everyone.” ~Lisa Macuja Elizalde

Exactly forty years ago, Lisa Macuja Elizalde made the crucial choice to return to the Philippines following a prosperous career at the Kirov Ballet (now Mariinksy Ballet) in Moscow. That homecoming served as the foundation for her quest to bring ballet to the people and people to ballet, which has impacted generations of performers and audiences.

Lisa celebrates her homecoming milestone forty years later via Ballet Manila's PRIMA Performance Season, a carefully curated program of classical works that highlight the company's Vaganova roots and its commitment to upholding excellence while making ballet accessible to Filipinos. A special collaboration with The Dawn is also part of the historic year, and it will be shown at Aliw Theater on February 20 and 21 at 8:00 p.m. This piece links the concurrent 40-year journeys of Lisa and The Dawn, both of which are icons of their respective generations, by fusing rock music with dance. The event will feature dance renditions of some of The Dawn's most well-known and iconic songs, highlighting Ballet Manila's continuous attempts to make ballet approachable and relevant.

The collaboration is being aired as part of the Ballet & Ballads series and is produced by the Manila Broadcasting Company (MBC). By sharing stages with well-known performers and offering free or reasonably priced admission, Ballet & Ballads, which was established by Fred J. Elizalde in the early years of Ballet Manila, has significantly aided Macuja-Elizalde's mission and vision to make classical ballet more accessible to the general public.

Ballet & Ballads is one of the classic pieces that will be performed at Ballet Manila's PRIMA Performance Season. The Manila Symphony Orchestra will play Sleeping Beauty at the Aliw Theater on March 14 and 15, 2026, under the direction of Maestro Alexander Vikulov. Paquita, which will feature the company's Vaganova heritage and classical correctness, will take place on June 20 and 21, 2026. The season will make a triumphant return with La Bayadère, which will take place on August 22 and 23, 2026. The Mariinsky Ballet's guest artists are Renata Shakirova and Kimin Kim, who debuted in the Philippines in 2025 with Don Quixote.

Other shows throughout the year include Ibong Adarna in Dumaguete in February and at Ateneo's Areté in October, the Holiday Cheer Series in December, and an overseas tour in Kuala Lumpur in September.

In addition to being a year full of performances, 2026 is framed by these events as a cultural cycle completed, a legacy fulfilled, and a future opened by a dancer who chose to return home while being on the cusp of international success.

The 40th anniversary of Lisa Macuja Elizalde's homecoming is more than just a momentous day in her life. The fact that ballet is a Filipino art form is proof of tenacity, the fulfillment of a promise, and the completeness of an objective.
