SM Mobilizes 100 Volunteer Teams for CSR Day

SM Volunteer teams distribute shoes to elementary school students of Balatong Elementary School in Bulacan. The activity was part of the SM Store’s CSR Day.

SM, through the SM Store, recently organized 100 volunteer teams from across its retail network for Corporate Social Responsibility Day. This initiative demonstrates the company's commitment to volunteerism and community service by encouraging employees to make a significant difference in the lives of those in need.

A total of 75 teams from the SM Store and 25 teams from various Retail Affiliates took part in a variety of community service activities. The initiative benefited over 100 people, including public schools funded by the SM Foundation, UNICEF Philippines, World Vision, Good Neighbors Philippines, and other local organizations. Volunteers distributed essential items like school supplies, shoes, hygiene kits, and food packs.

SM Retail has actively engaged its employees in meaningful social responsibility initiatives, with a particular emphasis on assisting underprivileged Filipino students. These initiatives include reading sessions, classroom painting, and community outreach. Through employee volunteerism, the company continues to empower communities and support Filipino youth.

SM Store Launches Shop & Share for Education program to empower Filipino children

The SM Store recently relaunched its Shop & Share for Education program, which will provide students with back-to-school kits in time for the start of the academic year 2024-2025.

Shop & Share for Education intends to distribute back-to-school kits to 12,000 elementary school students in more than 70 public schools across the nation. The initiative, which runs from July 1 to July 31, encourages shoppers who make a minimum single-receipt purchase of P3,000 to sponsor a child's school kit for P100. The kits include notebooks, pad paper, pencils and ballpoint pens, envelopes, and bond paper.

Shop & Share for Education, now in its second year, is an effort by SM Store to address the lack of access to basic school supplies, which is a high priority issue in the Philippine education sector. According to Department of Education data, more than 22 million students were enrolled in public schools during the school year 2023-2024. According to a report by the non-governmental organization Save the Children Philippines, many Filipino students in remote areas do not even have a pencil.

The first Shop & Share initiative benefited 20 schools across the country, working with a variety of NGOs and the adopted schools' local government units. The effort was successful because it demonstrated how the SM Store, given its size and national reach, can serve as an excellent platform for collaborative social good. This year's initiative will require each SM Store to adopt one school beneficiary.

SM Store believes that involving its customers has a greater impact on the program's beneficiaries. Everyone is encouraged to contribute by adding the school kit to the list for the next shopping trip in July. Each sponsored school kit represents an enhanced learning experience for a schoolchild in need today, who will one day become a steward of a brighter future.

6 healthy home-works in maintaining a healthy lifestyle from SM Home

With most of us homebound due to lockdown these days, it's the best time to start good health habits by preparing nutritious meals for the family and creating a wellness-based lifestyle whose benefits we will enjoy beyond the quarantine.  It's also the best time to rediscover the simple joys life and of doing things together.

SM Home, the one-stop-shop for all of your home essentials, shares with us some healthy home-works from the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization in maintaining a healthy lifestyle:

• 1. Prepare a Weekly Meal Plan and make a shopping list of items you need before you go to the store for your routine shopping. Create the list from the meal plan and include back up ingredients on your list in case your first choice is out of stock. Limit the list on buying the essentials.
• 2. Stock up on nutrition-packed food such as whole grains, bread, and fresh fruits and vegetables; and staples like sauces, milk, eggs, spices, and condiments. Fresh products should be consumed first. Frozen fruits and vegetables, as well as canned vegetables and fruits, are good alternatives as these have a longer shelf life.
• 3. Build up a stock of healthy snacks for your children - yogurt, nuts, cheese, chopped or dried fruits, boiled eggs, and more. Stock them up in a stackable glass container to seal freshness and label them.
• 4. Continue to practice Food Hygiene and Safety. Wash fruits and vegetables under running water and dry it with vegetable spinner; use separate chopping boards for meat and seafood as you prepare the meal, and don’t forget to wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water for 20 seconds before and after preparing your meal.
• 5. Drink water regularly and stay hydrated by drinking 6-8 glasses a day to boost your immune system.
• 6. Make cooking and eating together a family habit. Kids can help wash and sort the ingredients and set the table before the meal. This creates a healthy routine and fun bonding with the whole family. Also, practice mindful eating and stay away from processed food.

These are available at the smhome.com.ph and shoppers can now place their order online through the thesmtore.com and ShopSM app. For more info and updates, follow them at SM Home at the SM Store on Instagram or visit thesmtore.com website.
