Herbalife Nutrition Virtual Run Returns

“We want to encourage every Filipino to start moving and take the challenge to walk or run a certain distance. Through this initiative, we would like to inspire communities to support one another on a healthy living journey and strengthen their relationships through teamwork.” ~Sridhar Rajagopalan, Senior Director, Sub-Regional General Manager of Herbalife Nutrition Philippines

Get Moving with Good Nutrition, Together! Experience all-new race categories and join the challenge anytime and anywhere! Complete the run and win the rewards! Herbalife Nutrition will stage the second edition of its Virtual Run from October 1 to 31, 2021. Now on its second year, the challenge is part of the premier global nutrition company’s Get Moving With Good Nutrition campaign that seeks to give people the push toward healthy active living.

Sridhar Rajagopalan, Senior Director, Sub-Regional General Manager of Herbalife Nutrition Philippines, said that the Virtual Run is aimed at breaking the health inertia and fostering communities that support one another on their healthy living journey.

Rajagopalan added that this running challenge seeks to continue Herbalife Nutrition’s campaign of promoting a healthy, active lifestyle especially during this time.

Apart from the Philippines, the Herbalife Nutrition Virtual Run 2021 will also take place in Australia, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Last year’s Virtual Run gathered 14,000 participants covering a total distance of close to 600,000 kilometers across Asia Pacific. This year, Herbalife Nutrition aims to achieve bigger and bolder goals in the 11 participating markets. The registration period for this year’s Virtual Run is until October 15, 2021. For more information about how to join and the mechanics of the challenge, visit HerbalifeVirtualRun.com.

During the online media launch of the Herbalife Nutrition Virtual Run 2021, Rajagopalan shared the following tips on how to prepare for a running routine:

  • Have the Right  Running Gear
One of the key preparations in running is having the right running gear. Invest in essential items to make your running journey comfortable. Some of the items that you need to have are a pair of running shoes, distance running socks, and comfortable clothing.

  • Run It Out
Practice running your actual distance. Don’t forget to schedule one to two rest days a week to allow your muscles to adapt to the increase workloads and efficiently repair themselves.

If you’re new to running or not ready to run yet, start with walking. Once walking for a set time becomes easy for you, start alternating between jogging and walking until you find a comfortable and sustainable pace.

If you’re already an avid runner, start your training by time and not by distance. Run 20 to 30 minutes first and once you can maintain the pace, increase your time. Add cross training to keep your routine fresh, and aim for incremental improvements over time.

  • Use Nutrition as Your Fuel
To boost your performance, good nutrition is needed by your body. Make sure that you have a balanced diet consisting of the right amounts of carbohydrates to fuel your body; protein to repair and rebuild muscles and tissues; and fat, which is an essential energy source. Proper hydration is also important as you need to replenish the fluids lost during a strenuous activity.

Reversing Obesity Among Filipinos

“These results are a good sign that Filipinos are becoming more mindful about their personal health. Making healthier food choices and becoming more open to plant-based and meatless options and staying physically active — these are great ways to start combating obesity, which has been rising worldwide Obesity is recognized by leading health organizations, including the American Medical Association and the World Health Organization (WHO), as a chronic disease. It is associated with decreased life expectancy and co-morbidities and requires a long and comprehensive management approach to help people. Choosing a healthy eating pattern low in added sugars can have important health benefits. For many people, targeted behavior coaching, which transforms their eating, exercise, and other habits, known as intensive lifestyle intervention, can make a difference. Having an education in an area helps people think, feel, and behave in a way that contributes to their success, and improves not only their personal satisfaction but also their community.” ~Dr. Rocio Medina, Vice Chairwoman, and Member, Nutrition Advisory Board, Herbalife Nutrition

More Filipino consumers are eating healthier in the new normal, open to plant-based/meatless food – Herbalife Nutrition survey.

Reversing Obesity Among Filipinos with Dr. Rocio Medina

Premier global nutrition company, Herbalife Nutrition, recently released findings from the 2020 Diet Decisions Survey, which revealed that Filipino consumers are eating better. Among those polled, 53% said they have started eating more fruits and vegetables and 43% ate more plant-based food. Among the 11 Asia Pacific markets surveyed, the Philippines also ranked highest (62%) in their openness to plant-based foods/meatless options.

The survey, which polled 8,000 consumers in eight Asia Pacific markets, including Australia, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Philippines, South Korea, Taiwan, and Vietnam, also shed light on the motivations behind the consumers’ recent dietary and lifestyle changes, with the aim of inspiring more people to adopt better nutrition and lifestyle habits to improve their overall well-being now and into the future.

Dr. Medina spoke about “Reversing Obesity Among Filipinos” during the Virtual Wellness Tour of Herbalife Nutrition Philippines. The monthly event is part of Herbalife Nutrition’s continuing efforts and commitment to raising public awareness on the importance of balanced nutrition and having a healthy active lifestyle.

Obesity Definition:
  • Obesity is recognized by leading health organizations, including the American Medical Association and the World Health Organization, as a chronic disease.
  • Associated with decreased life expectancy and many comorbidities, obesity requires a long-term and comprehensive management approach to help people
  • The WHO has declared that obesity is the largest global public health problem in adults, which is becoming a more serious problem than malnutrition.

Dr. Medina added that the WHO has even declared obesity as the largest global health pandemic in adults and is becoming a more serious problem than malnutrition.

Citing figures from the Department of Science and Technology - Food and Nutrition Research Institute (DOST-FNRI), Dr. Medina said that one in three adults in the Philippines is obese and this trend has been increasing over time. A high prevalence of young adult obesity occurs across the country, with most obese young adults to be found in Luzon.

Reversing obesity

According to Dr. Medina, there are three factors that can help improve body composition:
  • Increasing one’s intake of high biological value protein, like isolated soy protein, egg white, beef protein, fish, poultry, and whey
  • Decreasing one’s consumption of simple carbohydrates such as white bread, white sugar, and white rice.
  • Increasing one’s physical activity like doing strength training for 2 to 3 times a week and resistance aerobic training 3 to 4 times a week.

Dr. Medina advised cutting down on added sugars.

Top motivators for eating healthier
According to the 2020 Diet Decisions Survey, 58% of the Filipino respondents have made a major change to their diet during the pandemic and 89% agreed that they had a specific moment during the pandemic when they realized they needed to change their diet. Among their top motivators include:
  • Their health (82%)
  • Weight loss (51%)
  • More cost-effective (27%)
Beyond making changes to their diet, 56% also started to exercise more, with consumers in Vietnam, Philippines, and Indonesia leading the way.

Filipino consumers believe they will emerge healthier from the pandemic
According to the survey findings, 77% believe that they would emerge from the pandemic healthier than they were before and 88% claimed they already noticed a positive difference in their health since they changed their diet. Majority (83%) said they plan to keep the dietary changes that they made for a prolonged period of time.

To help maintain their new diets in the new normal, Filipino consumers said having the following could help:
  • Easy-to-follow meal plans (62%)
  • Convenient alternatives that don’t take long to make (45%)
  • A health and wellness coach (40%)

When it comes to meal plans, Dr. Medina said that a reduced-calorie meal plan should be individualized. It should be selected to reflect the person’s personal and cultural preferences.

Concluding, Dr. Medina underlined the importance of nutrition education.

She likewise added that behavior coaching can also make a difference in improving one’s habits.

Herbalife Nutrition Survey Consumers Have a Clear Vision for Healthy Aging, But Fear of Illness Due to Lower Immunity Topped List of Aging-Related Worries

“This is the third edition of our survey designed to uncover concerns about aging across demographic groups and markets in the Asia Pacific, the region with the highest average life expectancy in the world. The findings showed that many people worry about falling ill due to lower immunity as they age – a likely result of their changing health concerns due to the ongoing pandemic. Additionally, we also observed that consumers in Northeast Asia markets, where an aging population is particularly notable, have lower levels of confidence in their ability to age healthily compared to their Southeast Asia counterparts. As Healthy Aging Month falls in September, this is an opportune time for us to deepen awareness about the need to take steps towards healthy aging earlier in life. At Herbalife Nutrition, we believe that a healthy diet and an active lifestyle can play a part in slowing down or preventing many age-related diseases. Most Asia Pacific consumers have already begun to consider adopting positive habits to age more healthily. However, with the fear of aging being prominent among consumers, we see a crucial need to help them strengthen their confidence in their ability to take proper actions. We believe that by sharing education on adopting the right nutritional habits and appropriate physical activities, we can help people find the right path towards healthy aging.” ~Stephen Conchie, Senior Vice President and Managing Director, Herbalife Nutrition Asia Pacific

In a world where everyone seems to be in a rush, it feels like time is flying. It's normal to have a fear of aging so no need to panic over it. You can do something to protect your health, your energy, and your vital functions from this moment on. Yes, our health deteriorates somewhat as we age. But if we follow a healthy diet, exercise daily, and make an effort to be active, stay in touch, and keep challenging our minds, the later chapters of our lives can be exciting. Survey reveals that less than three in 10 Asia Pacific consumers are confident in their ability to age healthily.

Premier global nutrition company, Herbalife Nutrition, today released findings from the 2020 Asia Pacific Healthy Aging Survey, which revealed that Asia Pacific consumers have a clear vision of what healthy aging means to them, but less than three in 10 consumers had the confidence to age healthily, with the fear of falling ill due to lower immunity as their top worry.

To shed light into Asia Pacific consumers’ aging-related fears, concerns, confidence levels, and actions, the survey polled equal numbers of:
  • Generation Z (18 – 23 years)
  • Millennials (24 – 39 years)
  • Generation X (40 – 55 years)
  • Boomers+ (55 years and above)
In 11 markets including:
  • Australia
  • Hong Kong
  • Indonesia
  • Japan
  • Korea
  • Malaysia
  • Philippines
  • Singapore
  • Taiwan
  • Thailand
  • Vietnam
For those who are concerned about aging, two-thirds (60 percent) of consumers started to have concerns between the age of 30 and 59, with bone- and joint-related issues topping the list of specific health concerns, followed by brain-related and eye-related issues.

  • Fear of Aging
Only three in 10 (28 percent) Asia Pacific consumers expressed confidence in their ability to age healthily. Consumers in Southeast Asia were generally more confident than those in Northeast Asia. Indonesia had the greatest confidence (61 percent), followed by Malaysia (44 percent) and the Philippines (43 percent). On the other hand, consumers in Korea (17 percent), Taiwan (17 percent), Hong Kong (13 percent) and Japan (9 percent) displayed the lowest confidence across the Asia Pacific region.

Defining Healthy Aging
When asked to define healthy aging in more tangible terms, Asia Pacific consumers painted a positive picture. Respondents shared that healthy aging is about being mentally active and sharp (61 percent), physically active (57 percent), not suffering from any chronic or acute illness (56 percent), living a free and independent life (52 percent), and not being a burden to their family as they age (51 percent).

Aging-Related Concerns
Over half (54 percent) of Asia Pacific consumers believe that discussions on how to age healthily should begin between the ages of 30 and 49. The most common reason given for postponing discussions about aging was that they are still young, followed by the prioritization of their present health and lifestyle.

Across the different demographic groups, younger consumers such as the Generation Z (31 percent) and Millennials (32 percent) displayed greater confidence in their ability to age healthily as compared to their older Generation X (26 percent) and Boomers+ (24 percent) counterparts.

The fear of falling ill due to lower immunity emerged as the top aging-related worry:
  • Two in five (38 percent) respondents worry about falling ill due to lower immunity as they age.
  • One in five (18 percent) worry that visible signs of aging will change their appearance.
  • One in five (18 percent) fear that they might become less independent as the body becomes weaker.

Regarding the potential aging-related effects that consumers will experience:
  • 65 percent of respondents believe that they would experience a decrease in mental acuity;
  • 57 percent believe that they would most likely suffer from chronic or acute illnesses or ailments;
  • Half believe that they will participate in fewer physical activities and be physically weaker as they grow older.

Taking Steps Towards Healthy Aging
Nonetheless, the majority of Asia Pacific consumers understand the importance of healthy aging, with seven in 10 consumers (73 percent) having taken steps to help age healthily. The steps taken include:
  • Making better nutrition choices (73 percent).
  • Engaging in more regular physical activities (69 percent).
  • Engaging in mentally-stimulating activities or hobbies (50 percent).
  • Taking supplements that promote healthy aging (46 percent).
  • Going for more regular health check-ups (42 percent).

Across the demographic groups, a larger proportion (75 percent) of older consumers such as the Boomer+ have taken steps towards healthy aging as compared to their younger Generation X (70 percent) and Millennial counterparts (71 percent). The Generation Z consumers also seem to be the group that is least likely to take steps towards healthy aging, with only 65 percent having done so.
