Herbalife Nutrition Virtual Run 2022 Records 15,000 Participants Clocking More Than 1 Million Kilometers, Equivalent to Running Around the World 26 times

“We initiated the Virtual Run in 2020, to help break sedentary lifestyles that became all too commonplace due to the pandemic. I’m delighted to see that the momentum has been sustained for the third year running, with new and returning participants joining as individuals or as teams with their friends and families, and covering impressive distances. With the New Year approaching, we encourage people to keep up with their new healthy habits and maintain active lifestyles supported by good nutrition.” ~Stephen Conchie, Regional President of Herbalife Nutrition for Asia Pacific and China

Herbalife Nutrition, a leading global nutrition company, has released the results of its annual 2022 Virtual Run, which aims to encourage healthy, active lifestyles among people in Asia-Pacific. Over 15,000 people from the general public, as well as members of Herbalife Nutrition and employees in the Asia-Pacific region, came together to race at their own pace, covering more than 1,053,000 kilometers, or 26 times the distance of running around the world.

Herbalife Nutrition Virtual Run, which has been held for three years in a row, has attracted 54,000 participants and covered over 3,220,000 kilometers, or 80 times the circumference of the earth.

The highlight of Herbalife Nutrition's annual Get Moving with Good Nutrition campaign is the Herbalife Nutrition Virtual Run, which aims to encourage healthy active lifestyles among consumers in Asia-Pacific and cultivate communities that support them. A brand-new Run App was added to the event this year to provide participants with a more interactive and streamlined method of tracking their progress.

The Virtual Run also helps the Herbalife Nutrition Foundation (HNF) raise money. The Virtual Run raised more than USD74,000 this year, bringing the total for the past three years to almost USD240,000, which will be used to support HNF's Casa Herbalife Nutrition program, which provides nutritious food to underprivileged children in Asia and the Pacific.

8 in 10 Consumers Expect to Gain Weight at The End of The Year

“Many people overeat during holiday family and friend gatherings, but by consuming some protein rich snacks before the party, you won’t feel as hungry and therefore reduce the chances of overeating. As our enjoyment of food is often in the first bite, it's best to enjoy the taste with just a small bite and avoid the discomfort of overeating this holiday. The New Year is an excellent time to get back on track with a renewed commitment to year-round health, and although it’s common to gain weight at the end of the year, the most successful New Year's health resolutions combine nutritious balanced diets and exercise, along with specific and attainable goals.” ~Dr. Kent Bradley, Chief Health and Nutrition Officer at Herbalife Nutrition

Premier global nutrition company, Herbalife Nutrition released the findings from its 2022 Asia Pacific Holiday Eating Survey today, which revealed that 80% of consumers expected to gain weight during the end of this year because they are less healthy than usual during this time of year. The respondents admitted to not getting enough sleep or keeping a regular sleep schedule, and eating unbalanced meals due to stress, lack of time and the temptation of holiday meals.

The survey also showed that one in three (32%) consumers are still carrying the weight they gained at the end of last year. Despite this, respondents are still planning to be unhealthy this year — in fact, five in 10 respondents (51%) are using the end of the year as an excuse to postpone eating healthily.

The average consumer expects to gain two kilograms before 2023 — on top of any weight they’re still carrying around from last year.

When it comes to eating habits, some respondents take this to a more extreme level than others: 38% have eaten more than one dessert at a meal, 37% have eaten more than three meals in a day, and 34% admit eating more than one of the same meals in a day (for example, two dinners).

While many are planning to end 2022 on an unhealthy streak — they’re planning to start 2023 with a clean slate.

The majority (58%) of those surveyed said they are making New Year’s resolutions, most of which are related to health. The top resolutions were:
Eating healthier (59%)
Saving money (57%)
Exercising more (56%)
Improving work-life balance (53%)
Focusing on self-care (50%)

Herbalife Nutrition’s Asia Pacific Holiday Eating survey was conducted by One Poll among 2,250 respondents in the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan and Vietnam.

Herbalife Nutrition and National Parks Development Committee Plant “Seedling” Bike Racks in Luneta Park

Domingo noted that not only would cycling bring health benefits to people, but also contribute to  a healthier environment.

What Are Functional Teas And Why Should You Drink Them?

Susan Bowerman, M.S., R.D., CSSD, CSOWM, FAND – Senior Director, Worldwide Nutrition Education and Training, Herbalife Nutrition

The benefits of drinking tea go beyond the art of preparation and taking in the aroma. Green, black and herbal teas contain phytonutrients, compounds that not only give plants their color, flavor and aroma, but can also benefit human health.

Some tea companies even infuse already good-for-you tea with vitamins and functional herbs. Consider them a different school of functional tea.

From fruit-infused green tea to “energy” and “bedtime” blends, there are dozens of functional teas to choose from. Here are a few time-tested functional teas to keep in your cabinet.

Green and Black Tea

To support antioxidant activity, prepare a cup of green tea. Made from the Camellia sinensis plant, green tea contains four components called catechins, which are part of a family of compounds known as flavonoids.

Want green tea’s nutritional benefits with an energy boost? Choose black tea. It contains up to two to three times as much caffeine as green tea (depending on brew time), with similar health properties.

Black tea’s “functional” compounds may also reduce stroke risk. University of California Los Angeles researchers conducted an evidence-based review of nine studies that involved 195,000 people total, including 4,378 stroke cases. The data showed drinking 3 cups of black tea reduced stroke risk by 21 percent. Researchers speculated EGCG, the tea’s main catechin, was a contributing factor.

Green, black and white teas all contain L-Theanine, which is the reason tea gives you an energy boost without the coffee jitters.

Chamomile

Chamomile promotes relaxation and restful sleep. Chamomile’s sleep-inducing effects have to do with the flavonoid apigenin, which binds to certain receptors in the brain, causing sleepiness.

Chamomile also holds anti-inflammatory properties. Researchers from University Hospitals Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, examined the anti-inflammatory effects of chamomile tea. They found chamomile exhibited activity similar to that of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).

Lavender

Just like lavender essential oils promote relaxation and sleep, drinking lavender tea has calming benefits. Inhaling lavender tea’s steam may slow nervous system activity, prompting relaxation, according to University of Maryland Medical Center.

Aromatherapists use lavender to treat headaches, nervous disorders and exhaustion. Other natural health practitioners recommend it in a bath to treat muscle and joint pain. Try a spot of lavender tea before bed and feel your cares melt away.

Peppermint

For an overall digestive soother, drink a steaming cup of peppermint tea. One of the best teas for digestion, peppermint is generally known to soothe stomachaches, cramps and heartburn.

Refreshing peppermint contains menthol, which can break up phlegm and thin mucus. The next time you have a cold, inhale the steam before you drink up.

Ginger

Ginger not only adds zip to baked goods and stir-fries, it also settles your stomach. Ginger contains at least 14 bioactive compounds that yield many health benefits.

Ginger contains a high level of antioxidants, which benefits heart health. It’s also considered an anti-inflammatory herb. Data suggests it moderates pain-sensitivity receptors, which may help ease arthritis stiffness.

Ginger’s most common benefit, however, is to ease stomach woes. Of the many ginger studies, one study found pregnant women who used ginger supplements experienced less vomiting and nausea than the placebo group—without side effects.

Green, black and herbal tea compounds may have beneficial properties, but the ritual of preparing tea also has a place in a healthy lifestyle. Curling up with a warm cup of tea is a calorie- and alcohol-free way to relax at the end of the day and it’s a great way to stay hydrated.

Rich in ceremony and steeped in tradition, drinking and serving tea is a daily practice for individuals worldwide.

Herbalife Nutrition Experts Share How to Address Inner and Outer Nutrition Needs by Age

“When we talk about nutrition from the inside, we talk about how diet impacts every part of your body -- every organ and every cell. Everything you eat also ends up on your skin. This is why we wanted to have this inside-out approach and talk about it from both angles. You can’t have one without the other. In your 20s, you still have the ability to put down some bone mass. You continue to accumulate bone mass until in your mid to late 20s, so getting enough calcium at this time is critically important. Iron is also important, especially for women. If you don’t challenge your body or change your routine at all, your body doesn’t really continue to grow or develop because it becomes used to that same routine all the time. Try to eat fruit or vegetable with every meal. It’s an easy rule to live by." ~Susan Bowerman, Senior Director, Worldwide Nutrition, Education and Training of Herbalife Nutrition

As the body ages, it undergoes many changes and so does the nutrition it needs. While a balanced diet and an active lifestyle are important at any age, there are challenges specific for each age that need to be addressed.

In the most recent Herbalife Nutrition E-Wellness Tour, Susan Bowerman, Senior Director, Worldwide Nutrition, Education and Training of Herbalife Nutrition, and Laura Chacon-Garbato, Chairwoman of the Outer Nutrition Advisory Board of Herbalife Nutrition, shared how eating habits and lifestyle choices can affect our body and skin.

The Herbalife Nutrition E-Wellness Tour is a monthly event presented by Herbalife Nutrition Philippines with the aim of imparting nutrition education to the public through a forum with health and nutrition experts and members of the media and the blogging community.

In the April event, Bowerman and Garbato discussed the challenges that people face in their 20s, 30s, 40s, and 50s and offered solutions on how to best address their inner and outer nutrition needs.

Establish Healthy Habits in Your 20s
While it may be challenging for people to start practicing healthy habits in their 20s as they begin to socialize and eat out more, it is important to keep in mind that eating habits at this age may affect their health in later years.

According to Bowerman, it is at this age that one should start consuming more calcium and iron.

She also advised against crash dieting and watching one’s alcohol calorie intake.

Garbato, meanwhile, said that prevention is important when it comes to the skin’s health in one’s 20s.
“When you’re younger, you tend to indulge a lot more. We need to remember that diet can impact the way the skin looks. There are also hormonal changes happening in the body, so there’s an excess production of oil. It’s an adjustment period for a lot of people, and lifestyle habits can really impact the way the skin looks. In our 30s, we should make sure that we’re masking, exfoliating, hydrating, and using that eye cream. Make sure that you are consistent with your self-care. Consistency is going to help you get through the different stages of your life and it’s going to help you age gracefully." ~Laura Chacon-Garbato, Chairwoman of the Outer Nutrition Advisory Board of Herbalife Nutrition
She advised establishing good self-care habits and avoiding the ones that can negatively impact the skin.

Eat Nutritious Meals and Exercise Regularly in Your 30s
In their 30s, most people juggle between their career and family life. They have less time to prepare balanced meals and exercise. Because of this, they find themselves putting on weight and not be able to take it off as quickly as they did when they were in high school or college.

To stay healthy, Bowerman recommended that people in their 30s make sure that they eat regular, healthy meals and snacks. Getting organized and stocking up on nutritious staples in their homes and setting aside time for exercise will also help.

When it comes to the skin, it is in their 30s that people start seeing the first signs of aging as their hormone levels start to decrease. Stress, changes in nutrition, and lack of sleep can also have adverse effects on the skin.

This is why, Garbato said, people should be more mindful of their self-care routine.

Re-Establish Your Health Habits in Your 40s
She added that at this age, people should watch their calories -- how much they take in and how much they expand. It is also important that they pay more attention to their muscle mass.

When it comes to skin, Garbato said that it is in one’s 40s that fine lines, dryness, sunspots, and loss of firmness start to appear.

To counter these, one needs to re-evaluate their diet and exercise.

Practice Diligence and Focus in Your 50s
As their muscle mass starts to decline and calorie requirements drop, people in their 50s should control stress eating. They should also eat more nutrient-dense foods and get plenty of calcium.

As with any age, having a daily skincare regimen must be prioritized and moisturizing day and night is crucial.

In closing, Bowerman and Garbato shared some advice about staying healthy at any age.

Reversing Obesity Among Filipinos

“These results are a good sign that Filipinos are becoming more mindful about their personal health. Making healthier food choices and becoming more open to plant-based and meatless options and staying physically active — these are great ways to start combating obesity, which has been rising worldwide Obesity is recognized by leading health organizations, including the American Medical Association and the World Health Organization (WHO), as a chronic disease. It is associated with decreased life expectancy and co-morbidities and requires a long and comprehensive management approach to help people. Choosing a healthy eating pattern low in added sugars can have important health benefits. For many people, targeted behavior coaching, which transforms their eating, exercise, and other habits, known as intensive lifestyle intervention, can make a difference. Having an education in an area helps people think, feel, and behave in a way that contributes to their success, and improves not only their personal satisfaction but also their community.” ~Dr. Rocio Medina, Vice Chairwoman, and Member, Nutrition Advisory Board, Herbalife Nutrition

The survey, which polled 8,000 consumers in eight Asia Pacific markets, including Australia, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Philippines, South Korea, Taiwan, and Vietnam, also shed light on the motivations behind the consumers’ recent dietary and lifestyle changes, with the aim of inspiring more people to adopt better nutrition and lifestyle habits to improve their overall well-being now and into the future.

Dr. Medina spoke about “Reversing Obesity Among Filipinos” during the Virtual Wellness Tour of Herbalife Nutrition Philippines. The monthly event is part of Herbalife Nutrition’s continuing efforts and commitment to raising public awareness on the importance of balanced nutrition and having a healthy active lifestyle.

Obesity Definition:
  • Obesity is recognized by leading health organizations, including the American Medical Association and the World Health Organization, as a chronic disease.
  • Associated with decreased life expectancy and many comorbidities, obesity requires a long-term and comprehensive management approach to help people
  • The WHO has declared that obesity is the largest global public health problem in adults, which is becoming a more serious problem than malnutrition.

Dr. Medina added that the WHO has even declared obesity as the largest global health pandemic in adults and is becoming a more serious problem than malnutrition.

Citing figures from the Department of Science and Technology - Food and Nutrition Research Institute (DOST-FNRI), Dr. Medina said that one in three adults in the Philippines is obese and this trend has been increasing over time. A high prevalence of young adult obesity occurs across the country, with most obese young adults to be found in Luzon.

Reversing obesity

According to Dr. Medina, there are three factors that can help improve body composition:
  • Increasing one’s intake of high biological value protein, like isolated soy protein, egg white, beef protein, fish, poultry, and whey
  • Decreasing one’s consumption of simple carbohydrates such as white bread, white sugar, and white rice.
  • Increasing one’s physical activity like doing strength training for 2 to 3 times a week and resistance aerobic training 3 to 4 times a week.

Dr. Medina advised cutting down on added sugars.

Top motivators for eating healthier
According to the 2020 Diet Decisions Survey, 58% of the Filipino respondents have made a major change to their diet during the pandemic and 89% agreed that they had a specific moment during the pandemic when they realized they needed to change their diet. Among their top motivators include:
  • Their health (82%)
  • Weight loss (51%)
  • More cost-effective (27%)
Beyond making changes to their diet, 56% also started to exercise more, with consumers in Vietnam, Philippines, and Indonesia leading the way.

Filipino consumers believe they will emerge healthier from the pandemic
According to the survey findings, 77% believe that they would emerge from the pandemic healthier than they were before and 88% claimed they already noticed a positive difference in their health since they changed their diet. Majority (83%) said they plan to keep the dietary changes that they made for a prolonged period of time.

To help maintain their new diets in the new normal, Filipino consumers said having the following could help:
  • Easy-to-follow meal plans (62%)
  • Convenient alternatives that don’t take long to make (45%)
  • A health and wellness coach (40%)

When it comes to meal plans, Dr. Medina said that a reduced-calorie meal plan should be individualized. It should be selected to reflect the person’s personal and cultural preferences.

Concluding, Dr. Medina underlined the importance of nutrition education.

She likewise added that behavior coaching can also make a difference in improving one’s habits.

“When we talk about healthy aging, we talk about aging with autonomy – taking care of your life and making your own decisions, growing older and deciding where you want to go, what you want to eat. Herbalife Nutrition Digital Technology to Make Fitness an Achievable Goal During and Beyond the New Normal with Samantha Clayton

“Three years ago, we started to work on our digital platform for fitness. It’s a free resource that’s for everybody. Digital has been driving fitness for a long time. It really amplified the average everyday fitness professional's voice. If you see a lot of the content that’s on YouTube, Twitter, or Instagram, the content that gets the most amounts of likes tend to be fitness-based content, so the digital transformation of the fitness world has been happening for a long time. It has always been supported hand in hand with going to a location to exercise, but as this year has gone on, the physical getting together piece has gone down a little, which has made the digital transformation of fitness move at a more rapid pace. When the sports world kind of stopped this year, we really had the challenge to put out really interesting and engaging content with our athletes to meet our consumers in their homes, meet our distributors, and people in the community in a space that we know. For many years, the fitness industry and the sports nutrition industry, in particular, was all about the athlete. Everything was geared towards speaking to the athlete, a person that was really striving to be the best at their sport. What’s exciting for me today is to share with you that the audience not for fitness and sports nutrition has really expanded,” she said. “People are truly inspired and interested in what good nutrition has to offer. I believe that it’s important that people subscribe to a healthy active lifestyle, which is not necessarily striving to be the best athlete in the world. It’s not about reaching peak performance; it’s about having simple daily habits each and every day so that you could be at your best. So whether that’s having a healthy breakfast or getting your minimum amount of exercise, a healthy active lifestyle is about sustainable healthy habits that last a lifetime. Your body is the one vehicle that will last you for the rest of your days. A lot of how that vehicle operates relies on you. ~Samantha Clayton, Vice President, Worldwide Sports Performance and Fitness, and Chairwoman of the Fitness Advisory Board of Herbalife Nutrition

As part of its Get Moving with Good Nutrition campaign, Herbalife Nutrition Media Roundtable with leading fitness expert Samantha Clayton - Vice President for Performance and Fitness, and Chairwoman of the Fitness Advisory Board. The forum focuses on the changing landscape of the global fitness industry, including recent trends in digitalization.

Citing data gathered by Herbalife Nutrition between February 23 - March 25, 2020, Clayton shared that key categories of conversation in Sports Nutrition International Online listening are: health (37%), market growth (28%), food (15%), science (10%), and nutrition (10%).

When it comes to what gets people moving, running and endurance training ranked highest at 26%, followed by bodybuilding/weightlifting at 23%, cycling at 13%, and plyometrics at 12%.

As part of the discussion, a nutrition expert highlights some of the fundamental innovations of Herbalife Nutrition in order to adapt to the “new normal” and make fitness and good nutrition accessible to a larger audience. To make the online engagement more fun and interactive, there has been a "live exercise demo" with Samantha Clayton.

A mother of four, including a set of triplets, Clayton holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Public Health with a concentration on Nutrition and Wellness. She has competed in the Sydney 2000 Olympics, and is an Athletics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA)-certified personal trainer and group exercise specialist and International Sports Sciences Association (ISSA)-certified personal train-er, group exercise specialist, and youth fitness specialist.

Premier global nutrition company Herbalife Nutrition leveraged digital technology to bring fitness to people through videos, virtual events, and other interactive platforms. One such platform is its Fitness Portal, which features workout videos that range from beginner routines to advanced workouts – making fitness an achievable goal for everyone. All videos can be accessed for free.

Clayton spoke before members of the media and the blogging community during the Virtual Wellness Tour of Herbalife Nutrition Philippines. The forum was held in line with Herbalife Nutrition’s Get Moving with Good Nutrition, a campaign that aims at breaking health inertia and fostering communities to sup-port one another on their healthy living journey. It was launched as part of Herbalife Nutrition’s 40th an-niversary celebration.

Clayton added that even when gyms start to open and people get back outside, people have realized the convenience of online workouts and that they could do it in their own time and in the comfort of their own home. For companies that create content, the challenge lies in making it interesting enough for people to consumer.

To address this challenge, Clayton and her team came up with a 2020 Quarantine Sports and Fitness Content that comprised of athlete cook-off contests, social media workout videos, sports nutrition blog series, Facebook live workout series, and social media workout graphics.

A former Olympic athlete, Clayton added that the audience for fitness and sports nutrition has never been wider until today.
