India is where the word "mandala" first appeared. The term is Sanskrit and means "circle." Deeper spiritual and metaphorical implications are also associated with the word, especially in Buddhist and Hindu traditions, where it stands for the universe, totality, and unity. In English, it is frequently used to display a geometric pattern or design.
