6 Smart Ways to Encourage Kids to Exercise

Written by:  Dana Ryan PhD, MBA, M.A. – Director, Sport Performance and Education

Any kid who has spent summer afternoons outdoors, playing ball, skating or biking can confirm this. However, cars, technology, and entertainment have dramatically changed how much we move.

We are at a point where it is normal not to move during the day. We have normalized a sedentary lifestyle and thus are at risk of making decisions that are not good for the human body over time.

And when it comes to children and exercise, the picture is not getting any brighter. According to the World Health Organization, there are 41 million overweight or obese infants and young children. If current trends continue, that number will increase to 70 million by 2025.

Off the Couch and on the Field: Getting Our Kids to Move and Exercise

So how can we help create healthier lifestyles for kids? The younger your children develop physical activity and good nutrition habits, the more likely it is that they will maintain them for life.

Here are 6 ideas to get your kids off the couch and on their feet:

  • Make it a family activity.

Kids might be unwilling to exercise if they see it as an additional chore. But if you join them and make exercising part of spending quality time with the family, their attitude will most likely shift. Set an example: bike together, play catch or go on a family hike.

  • Get the TV out of their room.

It might be tempting for children to stay in bed and watch cartoons or play video games all day long, especially on vacations. To reduce the temptation, place the TV in the living room and suggest playing some active video games to make the most out of their screen-time.

  • Organize active play dates.

Kids feed on their peers’ company and energy, so why not invite some of their friends ice-skating or swimming? Plus, feeling part of a community and having strong social ties encourages physical activity.

  • Let your child lead.

Children are more likely to commit to something that was their idea in the first place, so let your child chose the activity the family will engage in. Whether it’s a basketball match or a dance party, try to be encouraging and empowering them to make these small choices.

  • Use exercise as a means.

Physical activity doesn’t always have to be the final goal, it can very well be the means. If you’re going to visit grandma or to the movies, why not bike or walk there?

  • Get pedometers for the family.

Kids enjoy measuring things up, so why not get a pedometer – a gadget that counts how many steps you take – for every family member and compare their numbers at the end of each day? A bit of healthy competition might make wonders for your kid’s motivation.

Remember to pair these activities with good, balanced nutrition. You can start your own backyard garden and get your kids involved in making breakfast or dinner. When discussing childhood obesity prevention, we need to focus on physical activity and healthy nutrition, but also on making sure kids feel motivated in a supportive environment.

Country’s biggest international travel trade fair and MICE networking – PHITEX and MICECONnect 2019

“PHITEX is mounted annually as a support for stakeholders in the travel trade industry. Instead of working as individual operators and sellers, we provide a platform for them to connect to hundreds of buyers from all over the world in one venue, which saves them precious time and money. The event also gives buyers a more comprehensive view of the different destinations and packages that they can sell to consumers, either as an individual or bundled tours.” ~Marie Venus Tan, TPB COO

Now on its 18th year, The Tourism Promotions Board (TPB) Philippines, the marketing and promotions arm of the Department of Tourism (DOT), is set to boost tourism in the Philippines as it simultaneously mounts the Philippine Travel Exchange (PHITEX) and MICE Buyers Invitational (MICECONnect) 2019 on October 20 to 27 to promote the Philippines as a prime tourist destination for both leisure and MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conventions, and Exhibits/Events).

PHITEX is considered to be the biggest travel trade event in the country, with close to 200 sellers and 200 buyers participating. The main highlight of the event is the one and a half day business-to-business (B2B) session between foreign buyers and local sellers to encourage tourism-related discourse among the participants, and open doors for business opportunities.

Participants took part in the PHITEX educational seminar where industry leaders discussed new trends in tourism marketing as well as marketing strategies in mature and emerging markets while keeping the theme of “Philippine Tourism: Trailblazing Responsible Travel and Inclusive Growth,” in mind.

Giving their insights were:

  • Thomas Graham, Co-Founder of Make A Difference (MAD) Travel
  • Carlos Mori Rodriguez, the Chief Innovation Officer of EON The Stakeholder Relations Group
  • Nelly Nuezca Dillera, CESO III, the Deputy Executive Director of the Philippine Trade Training Center - Global MSME Academy, who ended the seminar on how DTI is building capabilities for halal development and certification.

PHITEX, MICECONnect 2019 is the continuation of a two-year program as a comprehensive educational seminar for local MICE stakeholders to learn new and effective global trends, approaches, and methods. This year’s focus is conducting business networking opportunities to further develop the country’s MICE industry. MICECONnect 2019, aims to accelerate the Philippine MICE industry by gathering MICE suppliers to showcase the country as a premium destination for international events and conferences.

MICECONnect 2019 likewise features B2B sessions for Philippine and foreign MICE buyers, and include a hotel and MICE venue inspection. Moreover, MICECONnect delegates will be treated to post-event tours to highlight some of the country's premier MICE destinations including:

  • Iloilo City
  • Bacolod
  • Davao
  • Boracay
  • Cebu
  • Bohol
  • Palawan
  • Tagaytay
  • Manila
  • Batangas

Apart from promoting what the Philippines can offer, TPB also advocates for the protection of natural assets and expanding the benefits of tourism to communities that are directly and indirectly affected by the industry, consequently helping DOT towards achieving its goals for the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Both PHITEX and MICECONnect 2019 enable TPB to support and raise awareness on sustainable community-based tourism.

PHITEX and MICECONnect Joint Gala Dinner with DOT and Tourism Commission Board

It's more fun in the Philippines!

A lot of millennials nowadays aren't much aware of everything that has to do with the '90s from music, fashion, famous street games of Pinoys, even food and known loveteams. But what makes me be proud of "Batang 90's" is that everything seems so simple before technology took over our lives. Back then you can just play games outside with your neighbors and or schoolmate simple as that without even using any gadget and much more interaction with the opponent, but nowadays everyone's on their mobiles playing games. That's why I was surprised and got trilled to see those old games I used to play during the PHITEX and MICECONnect Joint Gala Dinner at the Reception Hall of PICC last October 21, 2019.

Here are some of the homegrown '90's games:

  • LuksongTinik
  • Patintero
  • Yoyo
  • Tiyakad
  • Piko
  • Luksong Baka
  • Sepak Takraw

Now in its 18th year, PHITEX is considered to be the biggest travel trade event in the country. With over 200 sellers and 200 buyers expected to participate in this year’s installment, the country’s brand image is set to be strengthened further as participants are encouraged to promote competitive tourism packages.

The Tourism Promotions Board (TPB) Philippines, the marketing and promotions arm of the Department of Tourism (DOT), is set to boost tourism in the Philippines as it simultaneously mounts the Philippine Travel Exchange (PHITEX) and MICE Buyers Invitational (MICECONnect) 2019 on October 20 to 27 to promote the Philippines as a prime tourist destination for both leisure and MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conventions, and Exhibits/Events).

Guest and Media are welcomed with performances by Sindaw Philippines Performing Guild, Macky the Spinner, Sepaktakraw from Rizal Memorial and Mandaluyong Children's Choir.

The main highlight is the one and a half day business-to-business (B2B) session that will take place between foreign buyers and local sellers to encourage an exchange of tourism-related discourse among the participants and open doors for business opportunities.

Industry leaders will also take part in the PHITEX educational seminars as key resource speakers to discuss new trends in tourism marketing as well as marketing strategies in mature and emerging markets while keeping the theme of “Philippine Tourism: Trailblazing Responsible Travel and Inclusive Growth,” in mind.

Welcome Remarks by Secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat of Department of Tourism and Chairperson, Tourism Promotions Board.

Some of the big names gracing the seminar include:
  • Thomas Graham, Co-Founder of Make A Difference (MAD) Travel, who talked about sustainable tourism.
  • Carlos Mori Rodriguez, the Chief Innovation Officer of EON The Stakeholder Relations Group, who presented insights focusing on the Filipino in the UAE.
  • Nelly Nuezca Dillera, CESO III, the Deputy Executive Director of the Philippine Trade Training Center - Global MSME Academy, who ended the day with "Building Capabilities for Halal Development and Certification."

MICECONnect 2019 aims to accelerate the Philippine MICE industry by gathering MICE suppliers to showcase the country as a premium destination for international events and conferences. MICECONnect 2019 will likewise feature B2B sessions for Philippine and foreign MICE buyers. Part of the event will also include a hotel and MICE venue inspection with TPB officials and MICECONnect 2019 participants.

Performances By:
  • Jed Madela
  • Myramae Meneses
  • Rachelanne Pegason
  • Laserman JB Dela Cruz
  • DJ Karlo Headsman and Kulintang Player Mauie
  • Sindaw Philippines Performing Arts Guild
  • Buganda Dancers and Drum Beaters
  • Quezon City Performing Arts Group

Happening in conjunction with PHITEX, MICECONnect 2019 is the continuation of a two-year program, which began last year as a comprehensive educational seminar for local MICE stakeholders to learn new and effective global trends, approaches, and methods. This year, it will focus on conducting business networking opportunities to further develop the MICE industry in the country.

More importantly, both PHITEX and MICECONnect 2019 enable TPB to support and raise awareness on sustainable community-based tourism. Apart from promoting what the Philippines can offer, TPB also advocates for the protection of natural assets and expanding the benefits of tourism to communities that are directly and indirectly affected by the industry, consequently helping DOT towards achieving its goals for the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
