Sony Launches FE 100-400MM F5.6-8 OSS, The Perfect Super-Telephoto Zoom Lens for Hobbyists

Delivering Outstanding Mobility and Excellent Image Quality Across the Entire Zoom Range

Sony introduces the FE 100-400mm F5.6-8 OSS, a portable super-telephoto 100 mm–400 mm zoom lens for 35mm full-frame AlphaTM E-mount cameras that allows you to get closer to the moments you can't. Despite having super-telephoto capabilities that can shoot up to 400mm, this new lens is lightweight and compact, weighing only about 654 g. Excellent image quality is achieved across the entire zoom range with the most recent optical design, which combines two ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements and two aspherical elements. Furthermore, the lens's integrated optical image stabilization allows for fast, precise autofocus (AF) performance to help capture moving objects like birds, sports, trains, and airplanes, as well as handheld shooting in the super-telephoto range.

Key Features of FE 100-400MM F5.6-8 OSS in Detail:

  • Compact, Lightweight Design for Easy Handling, Even for First-time Super-Telephoto Users
With a super-telephoto zoom range of 100–400 mm and a weight of approximately 654 g, the lens is incredibly portable. Its design allows for rapid framing and handheld shooting in addition to making it incredibly portable. Through the use of the "compression effect," which makes distant subjects and distant background elements appear closer together, users can enjoy landscape photography that is only possible with super-telephoto lenses while also taking striking pictures of difficult-to-approach subjects like sports scenes and birds. When using an optional teleconverter, you can double the distance you can capture because the lens supports focal lengths of up to 800 mm or up to 1,200 mm in APS-C mode.

  • Sharp Detail through the Entire Zoom Range means you can Capture the Details That Matter
Regardless of the distance users intend to shoot, its optical design, which consists of two ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements and two aspherical elements that reduce chromatic and other aberrations and provide clear rendering across the entire zoom range, offers exceptional image quality. Its spherical aberration optimization and 9-blade circular aperture make the shooting subject stand out sharply in a soft, natural bokeh. With a minimum focusing distance of 0.86 m at the telephoto end and 1.13 m at the wide end, as well as a maximum magnification of 0.41x, users can also take close-up pictures of nearby objects like flowers and insects in addition to far-off ones.

  • Fast, precise AF and built-in optical image stabilization for moving subjects
The fast, precise, and silent AF of the linear motor drive allows the lens to capture moving subjects. The lens also enables high-speed continuous shooting with AF/AE tracking at up to 120 frames per second when used with the full-frame mirrorless camera α9 III.

The integrated optical image stabilization successfully minimizes camera shake during handheld shooting and enables stable framing and shooting, even when taking pictures of distant subjects. Furthermore, even when using a handheld camera, the lens is compatible with the coordinated image stabilization control and Active Mode image stabilization of the camera body, enabling high-quality still and motion picture shooting with less blur. It also supports the camera body's breathing compensation function, which corrects angle of view changes caused by focus position shifts during filming.

  • Usability and Reliability Built for Outdoor Adventures with Dust and Moisture Resistance
Its zoom lock switch, focus mode/range switch, and adjustable focus hold button enable comfortable ultra-telephoto photography and speedy operation in a range of shooting scenarios. Additionally, even in the event of unanticipated weather changes, users can shoot with confidence thanks to a design that is resistant to moisture and dust. Ghosting and flare, which can degrade image quality, can be avoided with the help of the included lens hood.
